At the Ponovezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak, the baal tokeia, for the 70th straight year, was the 96-year-old rosh yeshiva, Rav Gershon Edelstein.

Rav Edelstein has been the baal tokeia in Ponovezh since the early 1940s. His first tekios were for the Chazon Ish in tof shin hey. The next year, he blew shofar in Ponovezh. The makreis over the years have included Rav Elazar Menachem Man Shach, Rav Dovid Povarsky, and now Rav Berel Povarsky.

Last year, the shofar he had used for over four decades was found to be posul due to a hole. Rav Edelstein had received that shofar from a Rav Samuel, who passed away earlier this year. Rav Edelstein gave the shofar to Rav Samuel’s almanah. Last year, he chose a new shofar from a selection of shofros presented to him by a son of Rav Meir Greineman, and Rav Edelstein used that shofar again this year.

Rav Edelstein blew perfect tekios and did not need to re-blow any of the kolos.

On the second day of Rosh Hashanah, Rav Edelstein donned a new beged for the brocha of Shehecheyanu.

  1. למה צריכים לפרסם זה
    ?

הקב”ה יברך אותו בבריות גופא נהורא מעליא, וכו’, כמו שאומרים ביקום פורקן, עבג”צ בב”א

  2. “He blew when in aveilus?”
An aveil can’t blow shofar? He can’t, typically, be a shaliach tzibbur, but why not the ba’al tokeiah?
