rav-levi-dickerIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Levi Dicker zt”l, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Mercaz Hatorah of Belle Harbor. The rosh yeshiva had been battling an illness recently and the yeshiva had, in fact, been scheduled to hold a special dinner after Pesach as a zechus for his recovery. Rav Dicker was niftar this afternoon, just hours before Shabbos.

Rav Dicker was one of the prominent talmidim of Rav Aharon Kotler zt”l, at Bais Medrash Govoha in Lakewood, NJ, and devoted decades of his life to harbotzas haTorah and raising generations of talmidim. He was renowned for his hasmadah, his yegiah in Torah, his phenomenal and lucid shiurim, and his love and concern for each and every talmid. Klal Yisroel has lost a preeminent rosh yeshiva, a talmid chochom of note, and an ish emes and oveid Hashem who possessed sterling character traits and was a living kiddush Hashem.

The levaya will take place on Monday morning, Shushan Purim, at Yeshiva Mercaz Hatorah of Belle Harbor, located at 505 Beach 129th Street in Belle Harbor, NY.

May the rosh yeshiva be a meilitz yosher for his outstanding mishpacha, his many talmidim and all of Klal Yisroel.

Yehi zichro boruch.

A full tribute will iy”H be published at a later date.

  4. In earlier years, the Rosh Yeshiva, ZT’L, worked closely together with one of the other very top Talmidim of Rav Aharon Kotler, ZT’L, Yibodel L’Chaim Tovim V’Aruchim, Rav Yosef Yitzchak Feigelstock, Sh’lita. In the mid 1960’s, Rav Dicker founded the Mesivta of Long Beach in Long Beach, New York. Shortly after that, he had Rav Feigelstock come to be the Rosh Yeshiva, and they thus built up the Mesivta of Long Beach into one of the most Chashuva yeshivas in America. Rav Feigelstock, known as “Rav Yitzchak,” gives the top level Shiur; Rav Dicker, “known as Rav Levi,” gave the lower level Shiur, for Talmidim who had just finished high school.

(I never attended the Mesivta of Long Beach. In 1973-74 though, I briefly visited the yeshiva two times and actually met Rav Dicker. In subsequent years, I met a number of Long Beach Talmidim.)

In the late 1980’s, Rav Dicker founded his new yeshiva of Belle Harbor, which, also became a very prominent yeshiva.

I met one of his sons, Yibodel L’Chaim Tovim V’Aruchim, Rav Mattisyahu, Sh’lita; he informed me that he is part of the same Mishpacha as the earlier Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivas Ner Yisroel in Baltimore, Rav Shmuel Yaakov Weinberg, ZT’L.

    Y’hei Zichro Boruch.

  5. As much as we know about him he was still a nistar
Who can forget his unbelievable ?????? ?????
His pacing up and down the aisles learning totally oblivious to the world around him. His banging on his shtender trying to understand a tosfos or other rishonim his singing out loud when he was learning not even noticing anyone or anything in bais medrash. When he gave shiur his whole body was on fire like NSA ad har sinia.
Every Talmid thought he was his favorite,
His kesher was everlasting with a Talmid.
You always felt he only had talmidim at that point
In life since all he cared about was you
I can go on and on with stories
I just wrote this to the talmidim to be ????? them
When you were in yeshiva. HIS life revolved around yours making sure your ruchniyous and gashmious is taken care of.

  8. I was in Rav Levi’s shiur in LB. I was far from the best bochur. When I saw Rav Levi years later, he remembered me and greeted me warmly. I had the opportunity to see him again at a chsuna last summer. He asked me about my parnasah. He was concerned about that. He was such a warm and caring individual. Y’hay zichro boruch.

  9. T0 # 18- For Historical Accuracy- Lmaan Hoemes-

R’ Levi Z”L was not the founder of MLB- he came 2 yrs after it was establehed- in those yrs he said 11th grade shiur and then the 12 th grade where I heard his shiur- a few yrs later he started saying the 1st yr Bais Medrash Shiur-

I together with my chaverim enjoyed a life long relationship with our Rebbi-

    TNTB”H

  10. Was an unbelievable Godol – unique combination of Torah Ugedulah bemokom Echad wile still caring for ever talmid sincerely.
Wondering why the Levaya waas delayed till Monday morning? That means the kevura will be almost 4 days / 90 hrs after the Petirah. Why couldnt the levaya have been Motzei Shabbos?

  11. To Comment #24:

A Groisser Yasher Koach for your historical corrections. (As I noted, I never attended MLB; I just had two brief visits there and knew a few MLB Talmidim.)

  12. To Comment #26:

L’Aniyus Da’ati, the Levaiya was delayed until today because yesterday was Purim. Now, a Levaiya can be held on Purim. Now, the many Roshei Yeshivos and Rabbonim who were colleagues of the Rosh Yeshiva, ZT’L, along with the very many Talmidim of the Rosh Yeshiva, obviously all need to be at the Levaiya. However, most of them also have obligations to be at the Purim celebrations of the Mosdos that they are connected with. It probably would not have been possible for them — in the same day — to make a proper Hesped and Levaiya for the Rosh Yeshiva AND to properly take part in the Purim celebrations of their Mosdos.

L’Aniyus Da’ati, this is why the Poskim involved determined that it was better to make the Levaiya today.

  13. B”DE A TREMENDOUS LOSS TO ALL OF K’LAL YISROEL AND ESPECIALLY TO ALL THE TALMIDIM! THE ROSH HAYESHIVA SHLITA WAS 76

  14. Some of the things that i remember from my time there, the way he learned mussar on fast days is something that we wont easily forget. He would put on his hat and sit by his shtender rocking back and forth with a messilas yesharim reading in hes tune that he heard from reb Aaron who probably brought it from Slabodka. also shavuos night he sat without a chavrusa for 6 straight hours without getting up, without so much as a piece of cake. There are many talmiday chachamim today, the rosh yeshiva was our adam gadol, our connection to a man who was kulo torah, our link to a world that was.
