rav-drukIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Mordechai Druk zt”l, renowned maggid from Yerushalayim. Rav Druk’s divrei hisorerus and divrei chizuk, delivered at Zichron Moshe and other botei medrash across Eretz Yisroel, inspired thousands over the years. He was a remarkable baal darshan who touched countless lives with his powerful oratory and insightful words of inspiration.

Rav Druk was a remnant of the generation of legendary maggidim, such as Rav Shabsai Yudelevitch and Rav Shalom Schwadron. Like them, his drashos drew large crowds.

Rav Druk would begin each day at the Kosel, where he delivered a shiur in Daf Yomi. Following davening, he would head to Bais Medrash Zichron Moshe, where he would deliver a number of shiurim and drashos.

Known as the “Maggid Meisharim,” Rav Druk spoke in numerous locales and botei medrash across the country.
In recent years, Rav Druk’s health deteriorated, yet he continued his daily schedule of shiurim and drashos.

The levaya was held today on Rechov Shmuel Hanovi in Yerushalayim and kevurah took place in the chelkas harabbonim on Har Hamenuchos.

L’illui nishmas Rav Druk, we share here a beautiful, classic vort from him. In Shemoneh Esrei, we refer to Hashem as a “gomel chassodim tovim.” He performs loving-kindness with us. The word gomel does not literally mean to give, but rather to “pay back.” In a sense, we are saying that Hashem “pays us back” with loving-kindness. The obvious question is how can Hashem – who cannot possibly owe any mortal being anything – “pay us back”? He created us and gives us the life and the physical wherewithal with which to do any possible good we have ever done. Any good we’ve done is owed to Hashem and is paying Him back! So why do we praise Hashem for being “gomelchessed to us?

Rav Druk explained that much as we like receiving good, no one wants to feel like a shnorrer. If we would feel how much Hashem actually does for us – 24/7 free chessed in more than hundreds of millions of ways – we would feel like the biggest ‘chessed cases’ around, and that would somewhat sour the chessed which Hashem does for us. Hashem wishes to do complete chessed for us. Therefore, he makes us feel as if we are somehow ‘deserving’ of His chessed. He gives us mitzvos and allows us to feel as if we’ve ‘earned’ his loving-kindness. This is the ultimate chessed.

For us, too, as we seek to mirror the ways of G-d, such would be the ultimate in chessed. Were we to do chessed which the recipient feels was owed to him or her, we will never even be thanked or appreciated for that which we’ve done.

May Rav Druk serve as a meilitz yosher for all of Klal Yisroel.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  2. with a great sense of loss i express myhurt and deep feelings at the petira of this great tzadik! I attended many nofhis shiurim which he gave in Zichron Moshe and was greatly inspired by his torah, verter and his general outlook on theworld in general and on yiddiskeit. He was sorely missed the last fewweeks when he was too weak to give his daily shiur and will be sorely missed by all those who attended his shiurim.

Zecher Tzadik l’vrocho and may he be a malitz yoisher for all of us. We desparately need his zchusim.
