rav-mordechai-eliyahuRav Mordechai Eliyahu, former Sefardic Chief Rabbi of Israel, underwent emergency surgery this afternoon at Shaarei Tzedek Medical Center in Yerushalayim after his condition worsened following hospitalization yesterday.

As reported here on Matzav.com, the 80-year-old former Rishon Letzion lost consciousness for several minutes yesterday at his home, and after being treated by paramedics and regaining consciousness was taken to Shaarei Tzedek.

Physicians examined Rav Eliyahu throughout the night. Rav Eliyahu suffered a heart attack last year and had been in and out of the hospital for several months afterwards. Rav Eliyahu also had open heart surgery last year. Nothing significant was found by doctors until a CAT scan revealed that emergency surgery would be necessary. Rav Eliyahu was immediately rushed into the emergency room.

All are asked to daven for Rav Mordechai Tzemach ben Mazal Tov l’refuah sheleimah.
