Rav Moshe Cohen zt”l

It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rav Moshe Cohen zt”l. He was in his 90s.

A son-in-law of Rav Shmuel Ehrenfeld zt”l, the previous Mattersdorfer Rov, Rav Cohen was a rebbi for many years.

Rav Cohen was the patriarch of an outstanding Torah family. His only son, Rav Simcha Bunim Cohen, is rov of Khal Ateres Yeshaya in Lakewood and author of noted sifrei halachah. His daughters are all outstanding n’shei chayil, the wives of noted talmidei chachomim and marbitzei Torah.

In his early married years, Rav Cohen resided on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where his family maintained a close kesher with Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l. In his last years, Rav Cohen lived in Lakewood, NJ, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Devorah Londinski.

Rav Cohen’s rebbetzin is a great-great-great-granddaughter of the Chasam Sofer through the Chasam Sofer‘s daughter Hindel, who married Rav Dovid Tzvi Ehrenfeld.

He is survived by his wife, Rebbetzin Gittel Cohen; their children, Rav Simcha Bunim Cohen; Mrs. Esti Lesin, wife of Rav Shlomo Lesin; Mrs. Devorah Londinski, wife of Rav Yisroel Dovid Londinski; Mrs. Reizel Gruss, wife of Rav Mechel Gruss; Mrs. Leah Herzka, wife of Rav Menachem Herzka; Mrs. Chana Yitty Feigenbaum, wife of Rav Shlomo Feigenbaum; and Mrs. Rotenberg, wife of Rav Chaim Dovid Rotenberg; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren following in his ways.

The levaya will be held today at 5 p.m. at Yeshiva Chasan Sofer, located at 1876 50th Street in Boro Park, Brooklyn, and tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Khal Ateres Yeshaya, located at 908 East County Line Road in Lakewood, NJ. Kevurah will follow at the East 7th Street Bais Hachaim in Lakewood.

  1. I recall that he used to come sometimes on Shabbos to daven mincha at the Mirrer minyan in Borough Park (perhaps 10-20 years ago), and he would often be mechubad with the aliyah of kohein then.

    Boruch Dayan Ho’Emes.
