The Winner’s auction house is selling a letter written by Rav Moshe Feinstein to Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir regarding efforts to free hostages of planes hijacked to Jordan in 1970. Among them were Rav Yitzchok Hutner, his wife, daughter and a son-in-law.

“An urgent meeting of the Agudas Harabbonim [The Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada] held a solemn discussion about the dangerous state of the hostages in Jordan and the difficulty of the State of Israel to reach a decision on the matter,” Rav Moshe wrote.

“We saw fit to express our opinion, da’as Torah, on this matter. In Jewish law, saving a life takes precedence. If there is no choice, the State of Israel must comply with the terrorists’ demand in order to save the hostages’ lives.

“May G-d protect His people and may the Jewish people live in peace.”

A Jordanian attack against terrorist bases led to the release of the hostages in exchange for the freeing of several terrorists.
