Rav Moshe Pivovoz zt”l

moshe-pivovoz-1It is with great sadness that we report the passing this past Shabbos of Rav Moshe Pivovoz zt”l at the age of 96.

Rav Pivovoz, a humble tzaddik, a masmid atzum, and a respected talmid chochom, was a fixture of the Lower East Side community of New York City, where he was beloved at his shul, the Tzemach Tzedek bais knesses.

Rav Pivovoz was born in Pinsk and studied at the Karliner Rebbe’s Yeshivah Bais Yisroel in Luninetz before escaping with the Mirrer Yeshiva to Shanghai and then immigrating to New York, where he and his wife – Rebbetzin Nettie, daughter of Rav Kalman Avrohom Goldberg, rov of Adas Yisrael on the Lower East Side – settled and where Rav Pivovoz was a rebbi at Yeshivah Chasan Sofer.

In his later years, Rav Pivovoz could be found at any given time learning at Mesivta Tiferes Yerushalayim on the Lower East Side.

Rav Pivovoz is survived by his wife, Rebbetzin Nettie Pivovoz, and their children, Reb Yaakov Pivovoz, Reb Yochonon Pivovoz, Reb Shraga Pivovoz and Mrs. Sara Pilchick.

The levaya was held yesterday on the Lower East Side.

The family is sitting shivah at 210 East Broadway, Apt H106, between Jefferson Street and Clinton Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. 24K pure gold Tzaddik of the old school. He never said anything negative about anything. Showered others, even little misbehaving children, with unreserved respect. The world is a poorer place without him.

  2. My father Sheyichya lives in the same building.
I was there about 3 weeks ago and saw Rav Pivovoz
in the hall. He blessed me with a Kesiva Vchasima Tova. I was fortunate to receive his blessing before the New Year.

  3. I seriously doubt that there was ever a greater Rebbe in the History of this Yidden in this country. His Tzidkus was legendary. I will NEVER forget him. I constantly tell my Children about him.
