lieffThe Minneapolis community held a tzeischem leshalom event for Rav Moshe Tuvia Lieff earlier this month, as Rav Lieff has left Minnesota to take a position in Flatbush after nearly two decades of building and leading Congregation Bais Yisroel and the Minneapolis yeshiva community.

Rav Lieff has moved to New York to assume the position of mara d’asra at Agudas Yisroel Bais Binyomin on Avenue L in Flatbush.

Rav Yaakov Zev Katz, rosh kollel of Kollel Yad Chaim Mordechai in Beachwood, OH, and an old chaver of Rav Lieff, was the guest speaker at the event. Rav Katz recalled Rav Lieff’s days in the kollel of Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland and the unique personality that Rav Lieff was then and is until today. Rav Katz also has a deep and long connection to Minneapolis, as a son of Rav Mottel Katz zt”l, founding rosh yeshiva of Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland. Many decades ago, Rav Mottel sent talmidim to Minneapolis to found and build a day school. Telshe also supplied the rabbeim for a number of years.

Rav Chaim Simcha Gibber, rosh kollel of the Minneapolis Community Kollel, and numerous community members spoke at the gathering. Each one expressed in his own way the impact that Rav Lieff made on the community. He created a shul with a yeshiva-type atmosphere, in which there is learning day and night. He brought a kollel to Minnesota, which was originally housed in the shul, until it recently moved to its own brand new quarters. Rav Lieff caused an elevation of the Torah standard in the city among everyone, from the yeshiva type baalei batim to the unaffiliated. Appreciation for Torah, its study and talmidei chachomim has grown by leaps and bounds during Rav Lieff’s tenure.

Rav Lieff was the final speaker. He spoke emotionally about his family’s growth in Minneapolis. Every major milestone in his life, from the upsherin of his eldest son through the sheva brachos of his daughter, was celebrated in Minneapolis, with the Bais Yisroel community. Rav Lieff also announced that he would leave behind, for now, the Sefer Torah written in memory of his father z”l several years ago, as a tangible sign of his continuing connection to the kehillah.

A presentation was made to Rav Lieff by various community leaders of a large graphic depicting the shul in its various stages of growth, from the arrival of Rav Lieff in Minnesota until today. The event was followed by dancing and refreshments, as all celebrated the growth of the community, with confidence that the seeds so carefully nurtured will continue to flourish.

On Shabbos Parshas Re’eh, a Kiddush was held at Kehillas Bais Yisroel of Minneapolis in honor of the kehillah by Rav and Rebbetzin Lieff. Shabbos Re’eh was the last Shabbos that the rov spent with his kehillah and was the culmination of two decades of harbotzas haTorah in Minneapolis. Another milestone was Rav Lieff’s final Lunch and Learn shiur delivered at the law firm of Parker and Rosen. Rav Lieff has regularly delivered the Lunch and Learn for the past 19 years.
