Rav Pinchos Schreiber zt”l

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Pinchos Schreiber zt”l, who served as av bais din of Ashdod and rov of Kehillas Nefesh Hachaim there. Rav Schreiber was one of the first talmidim of Yeshivas Ponovezh and was a talmid of the Chazon Ish. A great marbitz Torah and talmid chochom, Rav Schreiber devoted himself to Torah and avodas Hashem, though he did not have an easy life.

At the tender age of 11, Rav Schriber suffered the loss of both his parents during the span of three days.

Rav Schreiber was one of the “Yaldei Tehran” and was on his way to receiving the state enforced secular education until he was saved as a result of a personal request of the Chazon Ish zt”l.
With his family having been all but decimated in Siberia, Rav Schreiber went to an aunt of his – the only relative he had – in Nahariya. Iut it is said that upon seeing a picture of Theodore Herzl on the wall, the young boy left, never to return.

Rav Schreiber went on to become a prominent talmid of the Ponovezh Yeshiva and the Chazon Ish, and was well-known as one of the prominent talmidei chachomim in Bnei Brak. He was close with many gedolei Torah, including Rav Chaim Kanievsky. He ultimately became a rosh yeshiva in Yeshivas Breslov for 40 years and av beis din of Ashdod.

Rav Schreiber was zoche to children who are well-known bnei Torah and talmidei chaochomim. His son, Rav Yosef, is rosh yeshiva at Yeshivas Maharil; his son, Rav Bunim, is one of the heads of Mosdos Ateres Shlomo; and his son, Rav Dovid, is head of the Kupas Tzedakah of Bnei Brak. His brother-in-law, Rav Chaim Shlomo Leibowitz, is a rosh yeshiva at Yeshivas Ponovezh.

A few weeks ago, Rav Schreiber was hospitalized after becoming severely ill. His condition deteriorated and tefillos were said in many yeshivos. Rav Schreiber’s yedid, Rav Chaim Kanievsky, had the name Boruch added to Rav Schreiber’s name as an added zechus. Last night, his condition improved slightly at Mayanei Hayeshuah Hospital, but early this morning, he condition worsened until his neshama returned to its Creator.

Rav Schreiber was 78.

The levaya will take place today, at 1:30 p.m., at Yeshivas Ponovezh. Kevurah will take place in the Ponovezh bais hakevaros.
