candle-small6It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Shalom Menashe Gottlieb zt”l, a rosh yeshiva at Yeshiva Beis Hatalmud in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. When Yeshiva Beis Hatalmud was established in 5708/1948 in the East New York section of Brooklyn, a core group of bnei aliyah served as the foundation of the yeshiva. A month after Reb Leib Malin’s marriage to a daughter of Rav Dovid Dov Kreiser zt”l, av beis din of Greive and a maggid shiur in Kletsk, a meeting was held in his home to establish the yeshiva. Rav Shalom Menashe Gottleib was one of the outstanding talmidei chachomim in the elite founding group. The others included Rav Leizer Horodzhesky, Rav Levi Krupenia, Rav Binyomin Paler, Rav Yisroel Perkowsky, Rav Leib Shachar, Rav Betzalel Tannenbaum, Rav Shmuel (Wilensky) Charkover, Rav Chaim Visoker, Rav Simcha Zissel Leibowitz (son of Rav Yeruchem), Rav Avrohom Leibowitz and Rav Binyomin Zeilberger.

Rav Shalom Menashe was one of the pillars of the yeshiva and bore the imprint of the old Mirrer Yeshiva of Poland. This was evident in his conversation, in his conduct and in his deeds. In founding Beis Hatalmud, Rav Leib Malin hoped to blend the Torah and mussar paths of Volozhin, Kelm and Mir, and it was the likes of Rav Shalom Menashe who helped bring this to fruition.

Rav Shalom Menashe, like the others, carried blood-soaked memories of the dreadful war with him. It took strength and determination to bear the burden of pain and grief. However, Rav Shalom Menashe did not swerve from his customary conduct and remained firmly bound with the other bnei Torah, occupying himself with Torah and mussar. He was a tremendous talmid chochom, whose Torah knowledge was a reflection of his unending devotion to limud haTorah. Some of his chiddushim are contained in the sefer he authored, Mishnas Shalom.

With the passing of Rav Shalom Menashe, we have lost one of the last remaining links to the Torah world of pre-war Europe. After over nine decades of total devotion to Torah, kiddush sheim Shomayim, and bringing nachas to the Ribbono Shel Olam, Rav Shalom Menashe’s pure neshama returned to its Creator.

The levaya will take place today at Yeshiva Bais Hatalmud, located at 2127 82nd Street in Bensonhurst, at 1 p.m. The niftar will then be flown to Eretz Yisroel for kevurah.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. I am not a great writer but I would like to share some of my feelings as a Talmud of Bais Hatlmud I had the Zchus of seeing the FOUR Toirah pillers in Yeshivah.
I will start with the hasmadah & Yiras Shomayim & Ahavas hatoire (love to learn) of these four Tzadikim. These four Tzadikim sat by their shtender & they did not stop to learn. Their Simcha of learning is beyond our understanding. The Eidelkeit of these Tzadikim is something that I will never Forget they ran away from Koved they did not demand any respect from their Talmidim.
Today we lost a picture that we will never ever see again of the old generation Tzadikim that went thru A Gehenom in WW2 & they did not give up. These Tzadikim replanted the SEEDS of Torah & not just learning but to be INGANTZEN (all the way) in learning to think in learning to be Mechadesh in learning & just learn & shteig with out any publicity.
I clearly remember the the Holy Rav Brus Zt”l, Rav Zeilberger Zt”l, Rav Perkovski Zt”l & Rav Gottleib Zt”l. May they all be a Meilitzim Yeshorim to all of Klal Yisroel.

  2. It was always a tremendous zechus to be in the daled amos of these heilige Talmidei Chachomim – sereidei dor yoshon. They lived with such pashtus, no fanfare – just total normal deveikus. Mi yitain lanu temurusun.
    Oy lanu lesfina sheavad kabernita.

  3. As a lifelong Bais Hatalmuder I would like to share some of my thoughts.
We were zoche to live in the shadows of the greatest Talmeidei Chachomim of the generation. We live a quiet idylic existence – never fully appreciating that it wouldn’t last forever. The Bais Hatalmud community is a throwback to a simpler more tzanua Torah-focused way of life akin to the shtetlach of old. Life in Bensonhurst was about Avodas Hashem, Hasmada, Lomdus, Chessed She’ll Emes, Being mishtatef in Simcha and lo aleinu b’tzaar. A life of simplicity with no need for moisros. Everyone lived simply – even the more well off (who never flaunted). It was a beautiful life filled with Toras Chaim – Ki Haim Chayeinu. It was led by the greatest – zecher tzadikim levracha. Who can ever forget Simchas Torah in Yeshiva – dancing in front of the great Roshei Yeshiva zt’l; Reb Chaim Visoker, Reb Binyomin Zeilberger, Reb Sholom Menashe Gottlieb, Reb Shmuel Feivushevitz and others wrapped in their Taleissim – we danced with such hislahavus – vetaher leibeinu leavdecha beemes, ana ana ana avdecha, etc. Tears are rolling down my cheeks.
We have lost such an aveida. Its the end of a dor – the dor deah that established our Makom Kodosh with Kedusha and Tahara.
There are no words to describe the anguish, the ache, the emptiness – oy mee yitain lonu temurasan.
    Tehai Nishmasan Tzerurah Betzror Hachaim.

  4. In Bais Hatalmud there is one currency; ameilus batorah, yiras Shomayim, hatzneah leches, hasmada, chesed.
Its no wonder that many of todays Roshei Yeshiva all come from this hallowed Beis Medrash.
The Bensonhurst community phone list reads like the aristocracy of Klal Yisroel:
    Berniker
    Bromberg
    Brus
    Ehrlich
    Feivushevitz
    Gutfreund
    Herskowitz
    Hess
    Kaplan
    Levovitz
    Perr
    Pincus
    Plotzker
    Rockove
    Rubnitz
    Serebruvski
    Shustal
    Stefanski
    Swiatitsky
    Swerdloff
    Taback
    Ungarischer
    Zeilberger
    Etc. Bli Ayin Hora.

  5. Bais Hatalmud was built to resemble the Bais Hatalmud in Kelm. The Roshei Yeshiva ztl all embodied the mussar of Kelm and lomdus and hasmadah of the Mir.
