Rav Shalom Ulmann zt”l

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Shalom Ulmann zt”l at the age of 83.

Rav Ulman, who resided in the Old City of Yerushalayim, was one of the most prominent talmidim of the Michtav M’Eliyahu, Rav Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler, and was greatly responsible for publicizing the writings of the Ramchal, Rav Moshe Chaim Luzzato.

Rav Ulman was born in Romania on 27 Cheshvan, 1930. He served as the official house bochur to Rav Dessler following the passing  of the latter’s wife. Rav Dessler and Rav Ulman used to eat every seudah shlishis together, and at the meal Rav Dessler would relate what he planned to say on Motzoei Shabbos. He actively sought Rav Ulman’s critique, and encouraged him to ask questions and offer his own ideas on the subject. Rav Dessler always offered to repeat Rav Ulman’s insights in his name, but the young man begged him not to do so. Nevertheless, if Rav Dessler mentioned the insight, he was always careful to state that it was not his but someone else’s.

Rav Ulman served for many years as a dayan in Tel Aviv and released a number of seforim based on the Torah of the Ramchal and the Arizal, including Daas Elokim, Ha’illan Hakadosh L’Ramchal, Sukkas Shalom, and Maftechos Hachochmah.

In the Old City of Yerushalayim where he resided, he regularly delivered shiurim on Kabbalah and Toras HaRamchal.

He maintained a close friendship with Rav Yitzchak Shlomo Zilberman, founder of the famed Zilberman chinuch method, and also had a close kesher to Rav Chaim Friedlander zt”l, mashgiach of the Ponovezh Yeshiva and fellow talmid of Rav Dessler.

Rav Ulman is survived by nine children, including his son, Rav Yisroel Ulman, who continues his holy work in publishing and disseminating the works of the Ramchal.

The levaya was held this evening at his home on Rechov Hatupin in the Old City in Yerushalayim, followed by kevurah on Har Hazeisim.
