a-sun-and-a-shieldIt is with great sadness that we report the petirah of Rav Shmuel Yehudah Paneth zt”l, the Dezher Rebbe of Miami, who passed away Tuesday night at the age of 82.

The Rebbe established a bais medrash in Miami some 30 years ago and brought a tremendous amount of Torah and chesed to the community.

The Rebbe, together with his father, Rav Yosef Paneth zt”l, Dezher Rebbe, endured much suffering during the Holocaust. The experiences of the previous Rebbe and his family are recorded in A Sun and a Shield, a dramatic work by Devorah Gliksman that chronicles the Rebbe’s family’s travels, from Ileanda in Hungary to Transylvania, as he and his family miraculously escaped from the Nazis. Within a few short years, their tranquil existence became a nightmare of upheaval, tension, and terror. Yet through it all, the Rebbe’s and his family’s profound emunah and bitachon sustained them.

While the Rebbe built Torah in Miami, he still maintained his bais medrash in Boro Park.

The levaya was held yesterday in Boro Park. Kevurah took place in Monsey.

The Rebbe is survived by his rebbetzin and their children, one son, Rav Yosef Menachem Mendel Paneth, and two daughters,  Rebbetzin Sheva Rivka Moskowitz, wife of Rav Yosef Chaim Moskowitz, Shatzer Rov of Williamsburg; and Rebbetzin Malka Leah Taub, wife of Rav Berel Taub, Neshitzer Rov. He also leaves behind three sisters, Rebbetzin Raizel Meisels; the Bobober Rebbetzin, Rebbetzin Hessy Halberstam; and Rebbetzin Faigy Laufer.

Yehi zichro boruch.
