It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rav Shmuel Zakai zt”l at Shaarei Tzedek Hospital  in Yerushalayim. He was 105 years old.

Rav Zakai was the father-in-law of Rav Reuven Elbaz, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Ohr Hachaimin Yerushalayim.

Born in Iran on 11 Teves תרע”ב, Rav Zakai immigrated to Eretz Yisroel, where he was one of the first disciples of Rav Ovadiah Yosef zt”l at his shiur given at the Ohel Rochel shul in Yerushalayim.

Rav Zakai was a hidden tzaddik who authored many seforim. He was very close to Rav Ovadiah Yosef and was involved in the release of the first volumes of Rav Ovadiah’s Yabia Omer.

His son-in-law, Rav Elbaz, a renowned rosh yeshiva, mashpiah and member of the Moetzet Chachmei Hatorah of Shas, spent Shabbos in Eilat for the opening of a Talmud Torah there. He returned to Yerushalayim after Shabbos for the levayah.

Rav Zakai leaves behind doros yeshorim, including his son, Rav Aharon Zakai, noted mechaber seforim and posek, as well as his daughter, Rebbetzin Elbaz, wife of Rav Reuven Elbaz, and Rebbetzin Cohen, wife of Rav Meir Cohen, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. David – dorot yeshorim is kilayim.
Im kvar, it should be dorot yesharim (pronounced with a rolling “resh” [not “reish”]!).
Presenting to a (presumed) majority Ashkenazic readership, it’s not dishonoring Rav Zakai zt”l’s memory to tell them that he left doros yeshorim, just like it was fine not to spell his first name Shemuel… it’s just using spelling that is familiar to readers.
