rav-aharon-leib-shteinman“Visitors to Kever Yosef are like those who commit suicide,” said Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman at his home at 5 Rechov Chazon Ish in Bnei Brak.

Rav Shteinman made his remarks to a group of dayanim who came to his home to discuss visiting the tzion of Yosef Hatzaddik and those who place themselves in immense danger doing so.

“The people who go there are forfeiting their lives. There is real sakonas nefashos. This is also called ‘hisgaros be’umos‘ (teasing the nations). They know it angers the goyim and they go anyway.”

“For what purpose do people do this?” asked the senior rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Orchos Torah. “Are there no kevorim here in Bnei Brak, or Yerushalayim, or up north to go to?”

“Anyone who goes there,” added Rav Shteinman, “if chas veshalom something happens to him, ‘damo berosho’ (his blood is on him, i.e., he is accountable for his own fate). Even an eglah arufah need not be brought for such a person. He is to blame. He brought it on himself. It is like one who committed suicide.”

“Nowadays that the danger is known to all,” concluded Rav Shteinman, “there’s no purpose in going, and the sakanah is greater than any gain.”

  1. Obviously Rav Shteinman is not referring to organized trips in conjunction with the IDF in which case it is part of the mitzva of conquering Eretz Yisrael.

  2. #1 Avi:

You obviously missed the words Hisgarus B’umos in Harav Steinman’s statement. There is no greater hisgarus then trying to conquer land!

  3. Hate to open a can of worms but the truth must be told. There is no mitzva of conquering Eretz Yisrael using military force now in 5771.

  4. Living in Yehuda and Shomron is not conquering the land. When the first residents of Yerushalayim left the old city to move to Meah Shearim and Sharei Chesed, there was a beis din that condemned them for that action, also.

Military force is used for safety and pikuach nefesh as it is in Yerushalayim, Ashdod and Sederot. Is living in Ramot, Kiryat Shmuel, Telse Stone, Beitar and Har Nof–also aggravating the goyim and conquering the land?

Is living in Bergenfield, Freehold and Lakewood considered TAKING OVER the state of New Jersey?

  5. Re #1 Avi:

My jaw dropped (literally) when I read post #1!! I have never commented on a website before, but this was so disturbing, I couldn’t resist.

How can one possibly have the audacity to say what a Gadol “obviously” meant and then proceed to convolute his words into one’s preconceived notions?! This really optimizes what our generation is so sorely lacking – real kavod hatorah. Honestly, the whole concept of “commenting” on a Gadol’s p’sack is deeply deeply disturbing. Can’t we just listen to their holy words quietly and obediently? How does one muster up the unimaginable chutzpah to weigh in on such a Giant’s p’sack???

  6. #1- you should read the whole statement, not just the headlines and you will realize that you are incorrect

#3- there is not necesseraliy a chidush, as R Schach ZTL stated many times that there is no mitzvah of yehareg v’all yavor in EY; however, some misguided amongst us say that there is such a mitzvah and this statement is to give these people the proper guidance
