rav-yaakov-yeshaya-blauIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Yaakov Yeshaya Blau zt”l, a senior member of the Badatz of the Eidah Hachareidis. He was 84.

Rav Blau was the rov of the Pagi neighborhood of Yerushalayim and the author of Shailos Utesuvos Pischei Choshen, among other seforim.

Two weeks ago Rav Blau was hospitalized at Shaarei Tzedek Hospital and was then transferred to the Tamir facility. He was niftar this morning.

Rav Blau was born in Yerushalayim to his father, Rav Baruch Yehuda Blau, a son of Rav Moshe Blau, one of the leaders of Poalei Agudas Yisroel, and his mother, Mrs. Yocheved Fruma Blau.

In his youth, he studied at the famed Yeshiva Etz Chaim in Yerushalayim, where he was known as a masmid and budding talmid chochom.

Rav Blau, who was recognized for his gaonus and breadth of knowledge, oversaw the kashrus and eiruvin departments of the Badatz, and specialized in dealing with cases of ribbis, heter iska and other halachic monetary matters.

Together with his close friend, Rav Moshe Shternbuch, the rosh av bais din of the badatz of the Eidah Hachareidis, he headed the committee established by the Badatz to deal with financial issues in the chareidi community which has fielded shailos from private individuals and large corporations.

Rav Blau authored numerous acclaimed seforim, including nine volumes of Pischei Choshen on dinei mamonos, Bris Yehudah on the laws of interest and heter iska, Chovas Hadar on hilchos mezuzah and more, Chanoch Lenaar on the chiyuvim of a kotton, Leket Ha’omer on hilchos challah, Malbushei Yesha on hilchos shatnez, Nesivos Shabbos on hilchos hotzaah and eiruvin, Tzedakah Umishpat on hilchos tzadakah and maaser, Pischei Mikvaos on hilchos mikvaos, and other seforim.

Rav Blau is survived by hundreds of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The levaya is scheduled to begin this afternoon from Rav Blau’s home in the Pagi neighborhood at 1 p.m. and then continue at 2 p.m. at Binyan Zupnik in Meah Shearim. Kevurah will follow on Har Hamenuchos.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. You leave out some very interesting and important information about the niftar zt”l.
At one point in his life who worked in a bank as a teller. He did so for quite a number of years. After a while he thought too himself I can learn Torah, why should I not concentrate on that and he quit his job. He began learning in a kollel and would sit for 6hours straight without picking up his head from the sefer he was learning!
A very warm person and outstanding Talmid Chochom.
    Mi Yitain T’muroso.

  2. the last of the old yerushalmi dayanim on the beis din. He came from an Agudist family and refused to sign the badatz posters. He worked as a banker most of his life, but spent most of his waking hours learning Torah. Honesty in money matters was a crusade of his…

  3. I believe that your post is misleading. My understanding is that he was already a massive talmid chachom. In fact he was asked to quit the bank and join the eidoh which he refused until all of his children were married. As an aside, in is assumed that his sefer bris yehudoh on ribis is as outstanding as it is based on him combined knowledge of the halachos and the banking industry.

  4. He worked at the bank for a short time and only entered bc he needed parnassah. They didn’t want to take him… until he proved to them how he could calculate mortgages and interest rates quicker then the guy using a calculator. He Chazered Hilchos Ribbis before he would approve a loan. The Minchas Yitzchok took him straight from the bank to the Eida Charedis. The bank offered to double his salary, but he said he’ll get what he needs from the Eida so he went with them. That’s the bank story. He was an unbelievable Talmid Chacham who was such an Anav as well. Yehi Zichro Boruch…. PS there’s no Pagi neighborhood, Pagi is a Shul in Sanhedriya.

    • Not true. There is a large group of buildings boarding the old Ramat Eshkol wall on one side. The Sinhedria square ie shopping area where the large schul is and Rechov Yam Suf where Sinhedria ends. BTW the main road into Sinhedria is name Recovery HaRav Blau for his father. There is also a Satmar/ Natura Karta schul in the square next to Shikun Ariel the apartment complex housing their members. His cousin Rav Tuvia Blau used to live here and his brother too HBCHL’CH. And I used to live there.

  5. i spent a week hanging around his home in sanhedria – probaly the biggest choshen mishpat posek in the world- was very close to rav belsky – oy oy

  6. There definitely is a Pagi neighborhood. The shul is Bais Medrash Dshikun Pagi. The neighborhood is a few strips of buildings next to the shul.

  7. it saddens me every time i read that another Gadol Hador has left this world & he is no longer here to guide us anymore. it brings tears to me when i know it could’ve been avoided.
