It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the sudden passing of Rav Yechiel Tauber zt”l, av bais din and rosh kollel of Kollel Mechon L’horaah of Monsey, NY. He was 74 years old.

Born in Budapest, Rav Tauber’s parents escaped during the tumultuous war years first to Antwerp, and then to Eretz Yisroel, before immigrating to the United States in the 1950s. The Taubers settled in Williamsburg and Rav Tauber studied at Yeshiva Shaarei Yosher, then led by Rav Yitzchok Dov Koppelman. He also became a talmid of the Pupa Rov zt”l.

Rav Tauber married his wife, Rebbetzin Yittah Wosner, a daughter of Rav Moshe Yehuda Wosner, of Shikun Skver and the Taubers settled in Shikun Skver, where Rav Tauber learned in kollel and where he grew close to the Skverer Rebbe zt”l.

He later went on to found Machon Lehoraah, establishing it as a center of Torah.  Rav Tauber was a renowned talmid chochom and a noted expert in halacha, paskening shailos in all areas of Shulchan Aruch as head of Mechon L’horaah of Monsey, a respected halacha institute and bais din. The author of a number of seforim, Rav Tauber guided and trained many young bnei Torah in p’sak, producing new crops of dayanim and halachic decisors.

Rav Tauber resided on Edwin Lane in Monsey.

Rav Tauber’s passing has plunged his many followers and admirers into mourning.

Rav Tauber leaves behind his wife, Rebbetzin Yitty Tauber; his siblings, Rabbi Ezriel Tauber, Rabbi Hershy Tauber, Rabbi Abba Chiya Tauber, Rabbi Amrom Tauber, Mrs. Malky Gelb, Mrs. Chani Brull, Mrs. Ruchy Spitzer, Mrs. Rikki Kraus; and his children, R’ Yitzchok Moshe Tauber, R’ Yaakov Yosef Tauber, R’ Ezriel Yochanan Tauber , R’ Akiva Shlomo Tauber, R’ Amrom Dovid Tauber, R’ Hershy Tauber, R’ Shimon Tauber, Mrs. Mameleh Krauss, Mrs. Rochel Malka Fleischman, Mrs. Gitty Weinberger, Mrs. Esty Lefkowitz and Mrs. Raizy Weiss.

The levayah will take place at 2 p.m. at his bais medrash, Machon L’Hora’ah, located at 168 Maple Avenue in Monsey, at 2 p.m., and kevurah will follow at the Vizhnitzer Bais Hachaim in Monsey.

  1. Rav Tauber ( and his brother, who should live until 120) opened up their Bais Din so that there should be at least one very good Bais Din in Monsey.
