rav-yehudah-tirnauerIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Yehudah Tirnauer zt”l, the beloved senior rov of the legendary Shomer Shabbos shul in Boro Park, Brooklyn.

He was 88.

Rav Tirnauer formerly served as rov of the Nodeh B’Yehudah Shul in Washington Heights, NY. For decades thereafter, Rav Tirnauer led the Shomer Shabbos shul, located at 53rd Street and 13th Avenue in Boro Park, Brooklyn, which is renowned for its minyanim around the clock.

The shul will now be led by the rov’s son, Rav Yitzchok Eizik Tirnauer, who had served as rav hatzair.

The man behind many of the efforts at the shul is the devoted gabbai, Rabbi Moshe Metzger, who is assisted by Reb Hillel Moses.

The third floor of the shul building is a bais medrash where people learn twenty-four hours a day. On the bottom floor, since 1996, the shul has had accommodations for all Yidden to come and eat twenty-four hours a day. The shul is also renowned for arranging rides for people.

The shul received the name “Shomer Shabbos Anshei Sefard” in the early part of the last century, when many Yidden were faced with the daunting nisayon of shemiras Shabbos. At the time, there was an early morning Shabbos minyan at the Anshe Sefard Shul in Boro Park. Davening began at 6:30 a.m. and following davening the people went to work, r”l. There was a group of Yidden, however, who did not go to work on Shabbos and wished to daven in a minyan of only shomrei Shabbos and only those who were makpid on taharas hamishpacha. A 9 a.m. minyan was established each Shabbos by these Yidden, and thus the minyan became known as Shomer Shabbos Anshei Sefard.

The mara d’asra, Rav Tirnauer, was beloved by the thousands of mispallelim – rabbonim, bnei Torah and baalei batim – who visit the shul each day. His daily Gemara shiur was a highlight of the day for so many people, who benefited from the rov‘s clarity and comprehensive chiddushim and biurim.

Rav Tirnauer had been unwell recently and Yidden around the globe had davened for his complete recovery. He was niftar this afternoon.

The levaya will take place this evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Shomrei Shabbos shul at the corner of 13th Avenue and 53rd Street in Boro Park.

  1. I remember his daily Gemorah shiuir. It was so geshmak, so full of Ahavas Hatorah
He was a great magid shiur
During the last ekufah we missed his shiur when he wasnt well
but now we know that it is just a memory
may he be a meilitz yosher for the whole kehillah kedosha

  2. I am very uncomfortable with the naming of a Shul and labeling its mispallelim as mechalelei Shabbos. The virtues of the Shomrei Shabbos shul should and must be extolled, but how dare we denigrate another Shul that continues to be one of the mainstays of Boro Park with its many Minyanim, Shiurim, etc., etc. Please take this as constructive criticism. Thank you. And may Rav Tirnauer be a meilitz yosher

  3. he was a living lesson in humility. he was the rov of maybe the mnost famous shul in the entire America yet you would never know it from speaking to him. He was a true anav.
Also he treated every person with such great kavod – at davening, at his shiur, etc
and he was always careful about keeping the aura of kedusha of the shul which is why it is sucha welcomign place for so many yidden and many troubled Jews who bask in the warmth of the Shomer Shabbos shul.
    yehi sichro boruch

  4. There is a history as to why the Shul was named Shomer Shabbos. We take things for granted but when people many years ago came to this country they had a Nissayon as to keep Shabbos or not, this Shul had a purpose of being a Shomer Shabbos Minyan.
Rav Tirnauer ZTL is a great loss.

  5. A real great loss. He was one of the last rabbonim of the previous generation. Where will we go now to see such exceptional ahavas yisroel and yiddish hartz as Rav Tirnauer had?

  6. Boruch Dayan Emes. Let us not forget the multitude of Talmidim that he influenced as a beis medrash magid shiur in Yeshiva Ch’san Sofer. We all felt a connection with him throughout all these years and were proud to call him our rebbe.
