rav-yissocher-meir[Video and photos below.] It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Yissochor Meir zt”l, the beloved rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Hanegev.

Rav Meir had been hospitalized last month at Beilinson Medical Center in Petach Tikva due to a case of severe pneumonia. He was placed on a ventilator in the intensive care unit to address the illness. At the time, talmidim of the rosh yeshiva visited gedolei Yisroel across the country to ask them to daven for Rav Meir. Rav Chaim Kanievsky advised a group of talmidim that a name, Chaim, should be added as a zechus for the rosh yeshiva.

He was niftar on Friday night.

Rav Meir was one of the devoted marbitzei Torah who endured many years of hardship in transforming the south of Eretz Yisroel, which was a desert in both the physical and spiritual sense. Today, the desert has begun to bloom, with entire communities of newly observant Yidden sprouting up amid the wasteland. Rav Meir produced countless prominent talmidim.

Rav Meir was born in Hamburg, Germany, 83 years ago and immigrated to Eretz Yisroel as a bochur. In Eretz Yisroel, he learned at the renowned Lomza Yeshiva in Petach Tikvah and formed a close relationship with both the Ponovezher Rov zt”l and Maran Rav Elazar Menachem Man Shach zt”l. He was recognized as a budding talmid chochom with tremendous promise. Already in his younger years, Rav Meir was sent on missions to foreign kehillos to offer chizuk and strengthen Torah learning and Yiddishkeit. He spent many months as a bochur in Morocco and Switzerland to strengthen the Jewish communities there.

After his marriage, over a half century ago, he settled in the city of Netivot.

From the quiet and remote town emerged outstanding talmidim, while Rav Meir established mosad after mosad to strengthen Torah and Yahadus in the southern part of Eretz Yisroel. Today, thanks to his efforts, the entire Negev is bustling with Torah.

Rav Meir is survived by thousands of talmidim in whose hearts there lies a great void left with the passing of their rosh yeshiva and moreh derech.
The levaya will be held this morning at Yeshivas Hangeev and kevurah will take place in the Netivot Bais Hachaim.

Yehi zichro boruch.
