It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rav Yosef Gelbwachs zt”l of Lakewood. He was 62.

Rav Gelbwachs spent his life in the world of chinuch and harbotzas haTorah. For many years, he led Yeshiva Ohr Chodosh/Ohr Hatalmud, successfully imparting Torah to numerous talmidim. The yeshiva was located on Park Avenue, two blocks from his home.

Rav Gelbwachs later opened his yeshiva, Yeshiva Noam Hatalmud, where he continued with his trademark derech of imbuing bochurim with cheishek haTorah and strong, unwavering hashkafah.

Rav Gelbwachs, Rav Yosef Yuzpa Aharon ben Yitzchok Avrohom, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Miriam Gelbwachs, his brothers, R’ Yisroel Chaim Gelbwachs and R’ Moishe Gelbwachs, and his children, R’ Yehuda Leib Gelbwachs, R’ Moshe Menachem Mendel Gelbwachs,
Mrs. Esther Mindel Joseph, Mrs. Chanie Lieder, Mrs. Gitty Friedman and Mrs. Baila Stroh.

The levayah will be held tomorrow at 10:45 a.m. at Yeshiva Noam Hatalmud, located at 216 6th Street, between Clifton and Lexington Avenues. Kevurah will follow at Wellwood Cemetery, located at 1400 Wellwood Avenue in West Babylon, NY.

  1. I am in shock!! He was my Rebbe 42 years ago to teach me alef bet and I still remember his warmth and lessons so well. I would really appreciate if someone in America could let me have a email address so that I can forward a letter to his family.

  2. @ a former pupil
I believe the Rabbi Gelbwachs who taught you 42 years ago is Rabbi Yisroel (Sruly) Gelbwachs, a brother of the niftar who is BARUCH HASHEM alive and well.
The niftar had a high school and Bais Medrash (Ohr Chodosh/ Ohr Hatalmud) for many years. The past 10 years he was Rosh Yeshiva at Yeshiva Noam Hatalmud.
