Two Torah Jews arguing about who would win the recent US elections made a bet that whoever turned out to be wrong would give $1,000 to tzedokah. The Vayishma Moshe Torah brochure reported various opinions regarding whether the loser was obligated to pay or not.
Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein of Bnei Brak reportedly said that the loser did not have to pay because his obligation was made erroneously under the influence of the tidal wave of false media flooding the United States, which made it impossible to see the facts.
Ga’avad of Chanichei Hayeshivos Rav Mordechai Gross objected that the Radbaz writes in a teshuvah that a chochom should not be lenient regarding vows made to tzedokah in order not to cause a loss to tzedokah.
Rosh yeshiva of Slabodka Yeshiva Rav Dov Landau was surprised that bnei Torah became so excited over the issue. The posuk states (Mishlei 21:1): “The heart of a king is [like] streams of water in Hashem’s hand; He turns it to whatever He wants.” Even if gedolim instruct us to vote for a particular person, this is only due to hishtadlus and not because we actually trust and rely on any politician, he said.
