shlomo-yehudah-rechnitzLos Angeles – Reb Shlomo Yehuda Rechnitz, noted philanthropist, askan and baal tzedakah, and chairman of the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation, has purchased Doheny Glatt Kosher meat market as controversy about its products continue to swirl through the Los Angeles Jewish community.

Reb Shlomo Yehudah has spent years in the healthcare and medical supply industry. He purchased the business from former owner Michael Engelman on Sunday, the fourth day of Chol Hamoed.

Last week, the Rabbinical Council of California pulled Doheny’s kosher certification, and on Tuesday The Times reported that the U.S. Department of Agriculture launched an investigation into the market.

It is not immediately clear how the sale would affect the USDA investigation.

Reb Shlomo Yehudah is a son-in-law of Rav Yisroel Belsky, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Torah Vodaas and posek of the Kashrus Division of the Orthodox Union, who was consulted by LA rabbonim regarding the status of meat bought from Doheny. Rav Belsky is one of the gedolei haposkim in North America.

Rav Meyer May, president of the Rabbinical Council of California, told The Times that the council would likely return its certification to Doheny under Reb Shlomo Yehudah’s ownership, possibly as early as today.

“This is a fantastic and an extraordinary development because of the rapid speed it took in the interest of the Jewish community,” Rabbi May told the LA Times.

Rabbi May added that Rechnitz was part of a meeting in which rabbonim and other community members confronted Engelman about the meat scandal. Reb Shlomo Yehudah, a businessman, quickly grasped the meat business. Rabbi May said: “He saw what the need was and he moved.”

Doheny Glatt Kosher meat market has come under fire since video released to KTLA purported to show one of the store’s associates at an unsupervised warehouse in Reseda in early March. In the video, the associate appears to load his car with boxes that once held glatt kosher meat, but that were allegedly repacked with other meat. The associate transfers them to Doheny at a McDonald’s, private investigator Eric Agaki, said, and Doheny unloaded the boxes at their market when the mashgiach is absent.

Agaki, who is Jewish, said he had no relationship with Doheny prior to the start of the investigation, but he said that during his investigation it became clear that “a lot of distributors had problems with Doheny.”

  1. reb shlomo yehuda is a tzadik, one of the nciest people you can ever meat, with a heart the size of the Amazon. What a special yid. yirbeh kemoso bYisroel.

  2. After he resettles the store, Reb Shlomo yehudah should expand into the shechitah business and provide meat for the whole country for reasonable prices. That would continue his great chassodim for klal yisroel.

  3. Most of his chessed is done behatzneia leches. We don’t even know kechtu hasaara of the greatness of Rabbi Rechnitz

  4. SHLOMA YEHUDA is if not the biggest baal tzedaka in America then he is pretty close to it. He is a twin to Yisroel Zev Rechnitz and a son in law of the posek Harav Belsky. There is no legitimate organization in the world that hasn’t benefited from SYR either directly or indirectly. There are thousands of families that have been touched by his massive heart and generosity. He under took this venture solely to help a few people have parnasa and to allow the restaurants, caterers and private people that bough from doheny to continue to do so. The planned extreme strict hashgacha measures that are going to be implemented there will make every other hashgacha learn from this store.

  5. Maybe SYR can buy the Dodgers? They stink & haven’t won anything in quite a while! I’ll come out of retirement & help out as well.
