Reb Sholom Mordechai’s Case Goes to Supreme Court

rubashkin1[Donate link below.] Lawyers for Reb Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin last Friday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review his conviction in the District Court of Northern Iowa, in hopes that the highest court in the country will find reason to revisit the case.

The lawyers filed a petition for a writ of certiorari, in which the Supreme Court agrees to review a lower court’s case.

Since the former executive of now-defunct Agriprocessors Inc. in November, his lawyers have appealed to have the conviction overturned, or for their client to get a new trial altogether. Earlier in the week, the appellate court had denied Reb Sholom Mordechai’s requests. He also has been denied bail on several occasions.

Reb Sholom Mordechai’s Supreme Court tactic is a long shot: The Court grants only about 1 percent of the petitions it receives.

Meanwhile, Rubashkin and other executives of Agriprocessors are due to stand trial on state child labor charges beginning in early May.
