candle-small5It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rebbetzin Basha (Bessie) Scheinberg a”h, wife of Rav Chaim Pinchos Scheinberg, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Torah Ore in Yerushalayim, rov of Kiryat Mattersdorf, and member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah in Eretz Yisroel. Rebbetzin Scheinberg was a daughter of Rav Yaakov Yosef and Rebbetzin Aidel Herman zt”l, the renowned mokirei rabonon, machnisei orech and Torah pioneers in America.

Rebbetzin Scheinberg passed away at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Yerushalayim at the age of 96. The Rebbetzin and Rav Scheinberg were married for close to 80 years. The levaya will take place this evening, at 8 p.m., at Yeshiva Torah Ore.

Born on February 22, 1913, Rebbetzin Scheinberg was a remarkable woman who stood at the side of her husband for decades as a true eizer kenegdo, allowing her husband to immerse himself in Torah and guide his countless talmidim. She was the true eim, mother, to the hundreds of bochurim at Yeshiva Torah Ore in Kiryat Mattesdorf, Yerushalayim. She lavished special affection upon the foreign bochurim, making them feel at home in the yeshiva and sharing a good word or some chizuk when needed.

As a daughter of Rav Yaakov Yosef Herman – known as “All for the Boss” for the book written about him – Rebbetzin Scheinberg, from a young age, was imbued with strong hashkafos and chashivus for Torah and lomdei Torah. She grew up in a home that was literally open to all Yidden who needed a warm meal, a comfortable bed, or a listening ear. These ideals stayed with her for her entire life, as she continued the legacy of her unforgettable father by continuing in his path of Torah and gemillus chassodim.

Rav Scheinberg, who is in his high nineties, was born in Poland, and moved to America at the age of nine. After attending public school and subsequently learning in Yeshiva Rabbi Jacob Joseph, Yeshiva Bais Medrash LeRabbonim in New Haven, Connecticut, and Yeshiva Rabbeinu Yitzchok Elchonon, he married Rebbetzin Scheinberg at the age of 19. It was actually his father-in-law, Rav Herman, who, years before, had gotten the young Chaim Pinchos Scheinberg out of public school and into a yeshiva. That relationship came full circle when Rav Scheinberg married the Rebbetzin.

Following their marriage, Rav Scheinberg and his Rebbetzin moved to Mir, Poland, where Rav Scheinberg learned in the Mir Yeshiva for five years. The Rov and Rebbetzin were from a handful of Americans in Mir at that time.

Rav and Rebbetzin Scheinberg returned to the US, and Rav Scheinberg became a maggid shiur at the New Haven Yeshiva, which ultimately closed in 1938. He then became the mashgiach at the Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim in Queens.

In the 1960s, Rav and Rebbetzin Scheinberg relocated from the United States to Israel, where Rav Scheinberg founded Yeshiva Torah Ore.

A few years ago, the Rebbetzin suffered a stroke and had recently been very ill. Rav Scheinberg called his daughters who reside in the United States to come to Eretz Yisroel to be at their mother’s side.

The Rebbetzin leaves behind 5 children, one son, Rav Simcha Scheinberg, and 4 daughters – Rebbetzin Wiener of Queens, Rebbetzin Zeldy Alpert of Brooklyn, Rebbetzin Rosengarten of Monsey, and Rebbetzin Altusky – and countless grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom are well-known roshei yeshiva, rabbonim and bnei Torah.

She is also survived by her youngest sibling, Rebbetzin Ruchoma Shain, author of All for the Boss, who now resides in Adelphia, NJ.

The Rebbetzin was predeceased by her illustrious son-in-law, Rav Nissan Alpert zt”l, a rosh yeshiva at Yeshiva Rabbeinu Yitzchok Elchonon.

 Yehi zichra boruch.

  2. BD”E

Those in my generation grew up reading All For The Boss. We didn’t have all the Jewish books that are available to today’s kids.

  3. I was lucky enough to visit rebbe3tzin when she was well and when she was uncomfortable, but she always looked so beautiful and when I left I was happy that I made her smile and sometimes laugh
