Rebbetzin Esther Baila Teitelbaum a”h

candle-small5It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rebbetzin Esther Baila Teitelbaum a”h, the Chenskowitzer Rebbetzin, who was believed to be the oldest rebbetzin in the world. She was 101 years old.

A daughter of Rav Aryeh Leibish Teitelbaum and a great-granddaughter of the Sigheter Rov the Yeitev Lev, she immigrating to the United States at about the age of 12. In 1930, at age 18, she married her cousin, Rav Aharon Teitelbaum. Rav Aharon ultimately took over his father’s leadership of the Chenskowitzer Bais Medrash in the Bronx, moving the bais medrash to Monsey in the early 1970s. Rav Aharon passed away about thirteen years ago.

The Rebbetzin is remembered for her constant kindness and warm words for one and all, and for serving as a model of an aishes chayil of the pre-war world.

She is survived by her daughter, Rebbetzin Yenta Halberstam, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rebbetzin Halberstam is sitting shivah at 3 Ralph Blvd. bet. Route 306 and Jill Lane, in Monsey, until Tuesday.

  1. Reb Teitelbaum A”H was my aunt – my mother’s sister.
    She will be remembered for her kindness and as an aishes chayil. They don’t make rebbetzins or anyone else like this anymore!! We are really going to miss her – she was a bridge to a glorious past that we can’t even imagine.
