candle-small4It is with great sadness that we report that passing of of Rebbetzin Sarah Kreiswirth a”h at the age of 91. The Rebbetzin was the wife of Rav Chaim Kreiswirth zt”l, rov of Antwerp, and a daughter of the renowned mashgiach of Slabodka, Rav Avrohom Grodzensky zt”l.

The Rebbetzin has resided at the home of her son, Rav Dov Kreiswirth, in Brook Hill Estates in Lakewood.

Rav Chaim, who was niftar in 2001, served as the longtime chief rabbi of Khal Machzikei Hadass of Antwerp, Belgium, and was the founding rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Mercaz HaTorah in Yerushalayim. Rav Kreiswirth was renowned for his brilliance in Torah and was dubbed the “Cracower Illui” already at the young age of 15.

After learning for many years in the famous Torah centers of Poland and Lithuania, at the age of 21, with the 1939 German invasion of Poland, Rav Kreiswirth fled to Lithuania, where he married his Rebbetzin. The couple then left via Vilna to Eretz Yisroel.

At the end of World War II, Rav Chaim returned to Poland in an attempt to rescue Jewish children who had been sheltered by the Catholic Church for the war’s duration. In 1947, he and the Rebbetzin moved to the United States, and from 1947 to 1953 he served as rosh yeshiva at the Hebrew Theological College in Skokie, Illinois.

In 1953, Rav Chaim and the Rebbetzin moved to Antwerp in an effort to rebuild the Jewish community there. Rav Chaim and the Rebbetzin devoted decades to the Belgian community, building Torah and influencing numerous people. Rav Chaim was niftar at age 82 on 16 Teves 5762.

The Rebbetzin was renowned for her warm personality and for her devotion to her husband. She touched all those who were fortunate to meet her, and inspired others by her phenomenal dedication to her choshuve husband, allowing him to learn and engage in harbotzas haTorah, while she tended to his needs.

Her love and sensitivity to every person were constantly on display, as she greeted all the people who would come to her home. At the end of her life, in Lakewood, she continued to be an inspiring influence upon those who visited her at the home of her son, Rav Dov, where she doted upon all the children who came to bask in the loving atmosphere she created.

The Rebbetzin is survived by her son, Rav Dov Kreiswirth, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Mercaz Hatorah, and her daughter, Rebbetzin Zelivensky, wife of Rav Pinchos Zelivensky.

The Rebbetzin was a sister of Rav Yitzchok Grodzensky of Bnei Brak; Rebbetzin Rivkah Wolbe of Yerushalayim, wife of the noted mashgiach, Rav Shlomo Wlobe zt”l; and Rebbetzin Rosenberg, wife of Rav Boruch Rosenberg zt”l, rosh yeshiva of the Slabodka Yeshiva of Bnei Brak.

The levaya will take place at 2 p.m. outside of Beth Medrash Govoha on Seventh Street, between Forest Avenue and Lakewood Avenue. Kevurah will take place on Har Hamenuchos in Yerushalayim.
