candle-small6It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rebbetzin Sarah Levi a”h, wife of Rav Bentzion Levi zt”l, the well known chief rabbi of Panama who was niftar earlier this year. This past week, Matzav.com had asked all of Klal Yisroel to recite Tehillim on the Rebbetzin’s behalf, but unfortunately she passed away yesterday. The Rebbetzin’s petirah comes several weeks after she fell on Shabbos on her way home from shul. The Rebbetzin hit her head and doctors performed an emergency multi-hour surgery. During the past few weeks, physicians had been working to improve the Rebbetzin’s health, but her situation worsened. On Erev Shabbos, the doctors called family members to be with the Rebbetzin during what they believed would be her last hours.

Rav Levi was a talmid of Yeshivat Porat Yosef and learned there with the rosh yeshiva, Rav Benzion Abba Shaul and ybl”c Chacham Ovadia Yosef. Rav Levi served as rov in Panama for 57 years and built and led the community, which now boasts a yeshiva ketana, yeshiva gedolah, 2 Jewish schools, a midrasha and a kollel. The Rebbetzin lived with much mesiras nefesh all her life for the community and was a true eizer kinegdo to her husband during his lifetime.

Rav Levi passed away in October of 2008 at the age of 83. His kehillah, Shevet Achim, has approximately 7,000 members.

The marriage of the Rebbetzin’s first grandchild is scheduled to be held this week in Yerushalayim.

The levaya will be held tomorrow in Yerushalayim and the Rebbetzin will be buried next to her illustrious husband.

The Rebbetzin is survived by her two sons, Rav David and Rav Chaim.

Yehi zichrah boruch.
