candle-small4It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rebbetzin Sarah Rotberg a”h, wife of Rav Zalman Rotberg zt”l, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Bais Meir of Bnei Brak.

The Rebbetzin was niftar on Shabbos afternoon at the Mayanei Hayeshua Hosptial following a few weeks of illness and hospitalization.

She passed away at 6 p.m. at the age of 96.

Rebbetzin Rotberg was born in 1916 in the city of Vilna to her parents, Rav Meir and Rebbetzin Leah Miriam Karelitz. Rav Meir, rov of the city of Lechovitz, was a brother of the Chazon Ish.

For half a century, the Rebbetzin served as a school supervisor for the Chinuch Atzmai network of schools, but above all, she was known the rebbetzin of Yeshiva Bais Meir, worrying about the welfare of the talmidim and serving as a pillar of support to her husband, the rosh yeshiva, Rav Zalman, author of the seforim Mishnas Toviah and Tov Daas, and a member of the Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah, who was niftar nine years ago.

The Rebbetzin was known for her righteousness and modesty, and the tefillos she constantly recited for the hatzlachah of her husband’s talmidim.

The Rebbetzin was a sister of Rav Shlomo Shamshon Karelitz zt”l, rosh av bais din of Petach Tikvah; Rav Chaim Shaul Karelitz zt”l, gaon av bais din of Sheairis Yisroel; and Rav Shmaryahu Yosef Karelitz zt”l, founder of Kollel Chazon Ish.

She leaves behind generations of talmidei chachomim and bnei and bnos Torah, including her son, Rav Zvi Rotberg, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Bais Meir; and her sons-in-law, Rav Eliezer Markowitz, rosh kollel of Yeshiva Bais Meir, and Rav Zev Shapiro and Rav Doniel Ginsberg, ramim at Yeshiva Bais Meir.

The levaya was held last night, Motzoei Shabbos, from Yeshiva Bais Meir on Rechov Devorah Haneviah in Bnei Brak to the Ponovezher bais hakevaros, where she was buried next to her illustrious husband.

Yehi zichrah boruch.

  1. She was probably the most choshuver woman alive! She sought the advice of and was trusted by the Chazon Ish The Brisker Rov Rav Zalmen Sorotzkin and Rav Shach stood up for her when she entered a romm.
R’ Yosef Izraeli is indeed a Son In Law and should not have been omitted. He is a giant in Torah and wrote alot of the Mishnas Reb Aharon!
