  1. “A nephew of the Chofetz Chaim, Rav Pupko was a rov in East New York and in Flatbush.”

I don’t think he was a nephew of the Chofetz Chaim. If he was, I would think he would have been much older than he actually was. There was a connection, but I think it was more distant than that.

  2. harav poupko was a talmid of the chofetz chaim for 13 years and stayed by the house of the chofetz chaim.i dont remember hearing that he was a relative.

  3. The Chafetz Chaim, zl, was a person who valued the gift of life. I recently heard that his nephew, Horav Chaim Yitzchak Pupko, zl, who served him for twelve years, once got up his nerve and asked the Chafetz Chaim, “How old is the uncle?” The Chafetz Chaim seemingly ignored the question. A few moments later, the Chafetz Chaim took an envelope of coins and handed it to his nephew. “Here, take this,” he said. A moment went by, and the Chafetz Chaim asked, “Are you not going to count what I gave you?” “No,” he responded. “It is not proper to count a gift.” “You are right,” countered the Chafetz Chaim. “Life is a gift from Hashem. It is not proper to count it.” What an incredible thought, but that is why he was the Chafetz Chaim.

  4. Rabbi Eliezer Poupko (or Pupko) (1886-1961) was born in Radin, Lithuania, on March 18, 1886. He attended the Telz yeshiva. Receiving Semicha in 1908, he served for twenty four years as chief rabbi of the Jewish community in Veliz, Russia. Rabbi Poupko was twice tried in 1930s for defying the religious policies of the Soviet Union and was sentenced to two years in a Siberian prison. He served only part of that sentence as the United States rabbinate was able to win a commutation.

Rabbi Poupko came to the USA in 1931, first serving congregations in Haverhill, Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island. In 1942, he became the Rabbi of the Aitz Chaim Congregation in Philadelphia. He was an honorary president and a member of the executive board of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada.

Rabbi Poupko married Pesha Chaya, a daughter of the Rabbi of Kenna near Vilna and subsequently of Saratov. Their four oldest sons were sent to study in the Chofetz Chaim’s yeshiva in Radin, and indeed many of Rabbi Poupko’s children went on to play a pivotal role within the Jewish world. Rabbi Reuven Poupko published a Sefer by the name of Toras Reuven in Philadelphia in 1940, containing a warm approbation by Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer that praises the author’s father. Rabbi Baruch Poupko became a leading American Rabbi and author of numerous articles, books and anthologies. One of Rabbi Poupko’s sons-in-law was the renowned Rabbi Mordechai Savitzky, Chief Rabbi of Boston and author of twenty-two works on the Talmud. Another is Rabbi Gedalia Dov Schwartz.

Rabbi Poupko died at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia on September 23, 1961. At the time of his death, he was the most distinguished rabbi in Pennsylvania. His wife Pesha Chaya outlived him, dying at the age of 87 in 1976.

  5. The chofetz chaim’s name was poupko.
The chofetz chaim was born in Zhetl, in northwestern Belarus. When he was ten years old, his father passed away. His mother moved the family to Vilnius the largest city and the Capital of Lithuania. While in Vilnius, the Chofetz chaim became a talmid of Rav Yaakov Barit. The chofetz chaim’s mother later re-married (Poupko) and moved to Radin. When he was 17, the choeftz chaim married the daughter of his stepfather.

  6. The Pupkos are mishpocha with the Trop Mishpocha. He may have been a descendant of the Granat (Rav Naftali Trop, Ztzk”l, who was the Rosh Yeshiva in Roden, The yeshiva of the Chofetz Chaim.

  7. Harav Pupko ztl was in fact not a nephew of the Chofetz Chaim- and the source quoted is not accurate.
Harav Pupkp was a talmid and ben bayis by the chofetz chaim for over 12 years
Rebbitzen Pupko was also a direct descendent of the Chernlobyl, Karlin, Bardichev, Cherkas, Chabad.

I met R. Yitschok Pupko, Z”L, and his son R. Moredechai in R. Yitschok’s home in the 2nd half of 1988. He said he was a distant relative– he did not say nephew. He also said that he had been a ben bais of the Chofetz Chaim for ten years — from when he was 15 -25 years old — and that he served the Chofetz Chaim as personal secretary for the last three years of the Chofets Chaim’s life.

He taught me 3 things in the name of the Chofetz Chaim
    about the essence of Torah
about true teachers of Torah , and
    about the purpose of davening

I would be glad to send the full quotes to anyone who writes :
