The young mayor of Florence is on the verge of becoming Italy’s youngest prime minsiter. 39-year-old Matteo Renzi announced today that he is beginning talks to form a new government in the next 24 hours.
He was instrumental in ousting his party rival, Enrico Letta, as prime minister at a meeting of the Democratic Party leadership last week.
Italy is suffering through its most serious economic crisis since World War II, and Renzi has promised to create more jobs and cut taxes. Unsurprisingly, few specific details have been offered, but with the embarrassment of Berlusconi in recent memory, he doesn’t exactly have big shoes to fill. Read more at Reuters.
