peter-kingThe Obama administration has changed its approach to fighting terrorism now that it realizes “this is a dangerous world,” the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee said.

Speaking on Fox Business Network this morning, Rep. Pete King (R-N.Y.) said President Obama has shifted away from some of the terrorism policies he advocated while campaigning, including closing the detention center at Guantanamo Bay.

“When the Obama people came in two years ago, they really thought once George Bush and Dick Cheney were gone, the terrorism was going to go away. That it was not the issue most of us thought it was,” King said. “I think there has been a real change in awareness by this administration.

“The first thing the president did when he came to office; signed an order to close Guantanamo. Guantanamo is still open,” King went on. “They realize how serious this issue is. They realize this is a worldwide threat and it’s on their watch. Reality has set in that this is a dangerous world.”

On the eve of a vote to extend Patriot Act surveillance authorities on Wednesday, the director for the National Counterterrorism Center, Michael Leiter, said that failing to extend them would be problematic and pose security risks. Nearly thirty House Republicans teamed up with House Democrats to defeat extending the act.
