christieFat chance for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s White House aspirations in the wake of his post-Sandy photo op with President Obama.

National Republican political consultant John McLaughlin said Christie didn’t do himself any favors with his enthusiastic embrace of Obama after Hurricane Sandy devastated his state – or with his arguably self-serving Republican National Convention keynote speech.

“It certainly hurt him, certainly among activists in the Republican Party that will remember that,” McLaughlin told The Post’s Fredric U. Dicker yesterday on Albany’s 1300 AM talk radio.

McLaughlin added that just “a couple of days after” Christie lavished praise on Obama, the president “certainly might have deserved some criticism, and still to this day, because the federal response in the area is nonexistent in a lot of ways.”

Christie has been unapologetic for his praise of Obama and noted his stumping on Mitt Romney’s behalf.

Meanwhile, failed 2012 presidential candidate Newt Gingrich declared he was “dumbfounded” that Romney won far fewer votes than 2008 GOP standard-bearer John McCain – who got spanked by Obama.

“If you had said to me three weeks ago that Mitt Romney would get fewer votes than John McCain – and it looks like he’ll be 2 million fewer – I would have been dumbfounded,” former House Speaker Gingrich (R-Ga.) said on NBC’s “Today” show.

The Associated Press’ latest count gives Romney 58.8 million votes; McCain received 59.9 million votes in 2008.

  1. It is really sad that a hurricane has to be political. Would there be a single story if Christie was a democrat or Obama a republican. Yet somehow because they are affiliated with different political parties a compliment from Christie is horrible. Assuming Obama did a Good Job, should we expect Christie not to thank him. Is that really the Jewish way?

  2. And maybe Gov. Christic will want to wait until the Republican Party gets its act together and reclaims its agenda from the far-right, billioniare-funded lunatic fringe. Why couldn’t they get a normal candidate to run this year? Because the Republican Party has been hijacked by the extremists, who push an agenda that contradicts traditional Republican principles.

  3. McLaughlin’s comment said Christie hurt himself. The story headline is that Christie “blew” it. The headline also called it a report. McLaughlin made a statement.

Even if Christie hurt himself, no one said he blew it. Also, this was a statement by a strategist, not a report.

2016 is 4 years off. What happened a few weeks ago might not make a difference.

  4. We all talk about working together – reaching across the aisle of Congress, the Senate etc – so here comes a Republican working with a Democrat – and the world cries foul! So sad.

  5. 1. It’s a long time until 2016 and by that time O will have wreaked such havoc that we will be begging Christie to run.
    2. I would take him this second if he was willing and it was possible, photo op or not!!!

  6. This is so not true. Even thought I am a Republican I was impressed by CHristie’s overlooking party lines for the hurricane victims. Obama is the president so Christie had to turn to him for help. I can’t believe it will have a negative affect on Christiel’s chances and might even have a positive affect.

  7. For the same reason that Mitt Romney abruptly decided against taking Christie as his running mate, is the same reason Christie is not going to become president. He doesn’t have what it takes. He is too brash and a little arrogant too. It’s not gonna happen so let’s all calm down.

  8. Christie is a very good Governor. A lot can happen in 4 years. I think he is to liberal so I wouldn’t vote for him but he could do quite well in the primary’s.
