The White House is contemplating backing a UN Security Council resolution containing parameters for a peace negotiation between Israel and the Palestinians before Barack Obama leaves office, the Wall Street Journal reported this week.

The Journal said that internal discussions have taken place, pushing US backing for the resolution, which calls on both sides to “compromise” on key issues.

A number of other possible initiatives were discussed, including a presidential speech and a joint statement from the Middle East Quartet.

A senior administration official told the Journal that “no final decisions have been made” and that Obama was “considering a range of possibilities.”

Officials also said that Obama hoped to put the Israeli-Palestinian issue on a “more promising trajectory” before his successor takes office in January, WSJ reported.

  1. Many have tried, none have succeeded. The trajectory is “crash and burn,” especially since the other side is usually responsible.

Abba Eban: “The Arabs never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.”

  2. The Arabs are totally flexible, just as long as any final deal includes the complete destruction of Israel. Anything short of that is just an interim deal in their minds. Once President Obama realizes that fact perhaps he’ll stop banging his head against the wall that so many other well-meaning outsiders have banged.

  3. The juxtaposition of “Promising Trajectory” from this article’s title and the Iranian missile launch (with their stated intent of “Wiping out Israel”) from another article is sadly ironic.
