Rick Santorum’s Warning To Republicans: Embracing Same Gender Marriage Is ‘Suicidal’

rick-santorumFormer Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) on Monday cautioned his fellow Republicans against supporting marriage equality, saying that to do so would be “suicidal” for the party.

In an interview with the Des Moines Register, Santorum said he didn’t think the party would undergo a radical shift on the issue, even though public opinion has been steadily changing for years, to the point that polls now show a solid majority of Americans support same-gender marriage. And he compared the recent conversion on same gender marriage by two Republican senators – Illinois’ Mark Kirk and Ohio’s Rob Portman – to Republicans splitting with the party on abortion rights decades ago.

“I’m sure you could go back and read stories, oh, you know, ‘The Republican Party’s going to change. This is the future.’ Obviously that didn’t happen,” Santorum told the Register. “I think you’re going to see the same stories written now, and it’s not going to happen. The Republican Party’s not going to change on this issue. In my opinion it would be suicidal if it did.”

Santorum said that while he thought the party should have an open discussion about same gender marriage, Republicans should not change their “foundational principles.”

“Just because some of those things happen to be popular right now doesn’t mean the Republican Party should follow suit,” he said.
Santorum joins a chorus of conservatives who’ve bucked the party’s big rebranding effort, which is aimed at adopting a softer tone on social issues and attracting a wider swath of voters in future elections. Shortly after Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus announced the findings of the party’s “autopsy” report – which recommended that Republicans convince [same gender] voters that “we care about them, too” – former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee warned that evangelicals would splinter off to form their own party should the GOP shift on same-[gender] marriage. Similarly, Newt Gingrich cautioned that a party-wide embrace of same-[gender] marriage would lead some conservatives to “flake off.”

  1. Although I respect Santorum’s statement, it’s a sad reality that we have to face that this even needs to be said. Hopefully there will be some remnant of sanity in the Republican Party of the future…

  2. That’s the way. Not to let yourself be manipulated by liberal media and sophisticated propaganda, including various phony ‘polls’. Any conservative who throws in the towel on this issue should join the Donkey party.

  3. Rick Santorum is %100 correct. The defeatest’s who have highjacked the Republican Party are a bunch of washed up old RINO’s! The brain dead elitists, like Reince Priebus, are so stupid! They put up these softy LOSERS like John “I’m not a racist” McCain & Mitt “what am I today?” Romney! Yeh, they were just great! Lets just agree to the Democrats on everything and merge into one happy Party! Just like the days of the Soviet Union! Everyone will just love us!

The silent majority have yet to speak out. Keep a watchful eye on Santorum and Rand Paul. Too bad Mike Huckabee is not interested in the job.

Rand Paul voted against a resolution opposing Iran’s nuclear program.

  5. IF you like Rick Santorum, get yourself a new testament and stick it on your bookshelf and by your bedside. The man is not ingrained in human dignity and has no foresight for tomorrows future. And if you ask me, he is a waste of human discretion.

  6. I have hatred for fraud. His type of tea is steeped in fraud and insatiable foolishness. So Do I hate Mr. Santorum? No. He even has nice sweater vests. Would I follow him into war? Not a chance.

  7. I agree with Santorum 100%, and I believe he was the only one who could have beat Obama in 2012.
He is simply not afraid to speak up to the bully in the schoolyard.
I hope he runs again, with a very very savvy campaign crew.

  8. #6: Rand Paul is a libertarian, hence he voted against the Iran resolution. Domestically speaking he represents the desires of conservatives quite well.

  9. Santorum is absolutely right! This is part of the 7 Noahide Laws. G-D destroyed the world because of those marriage contracts then and it is a warning to the world now, that the whole world will be in great danger; thus, it is suicidal. He speaks the truth!
