Rockland: Jaffee Beats Back Challenger in Primary

Airmont resident Thomas Gulla’s effort to unseat longtime Democratic Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee in Rockland County has come up short, Matzav.com has learned.

The 72-year-old Jaffe, a mother and grandmother from Suffern, has held her position since 2006 and will stay in her role after beating Gulla by about 30 percentage points. She has, in the past, worked against the frum community, and particularly yeshivos. The frum community backed her opponent, hoping he would bring a fairer voice to the Assembly.

Gulla, an Airmont Planning Board member, said that the five-term incumbent hasn’t done enough to solve problems in the East Ramapo schools or to stave off overdevelopment, but voters in the primary stuck with Jaffee, who will face Republican Joe Chabot in the November election for the seat representing the 97th District, which includes Orangetown, Spring Valley, Suffern, Airmont, Chestnut Ridge, Hillburn, Montebello, Shikun Skver, and parts of Monsey.

Gulla had been fighting for a better funding formula for the East Ramapo school district, an issue he said Jaffee has yet to address effectively. Gulla taught high school for 30 years, has served for over 15 years on the Airmont Planning Board, and owns a landscape/irrigation company.

  1. the biggest issue in this race was assisted suicide as is evidenced by the psak of Monsey leading rabbanim assering voting for a candidate that supports assisted suicide, which Jaffee did
and her attack on Yeshivas was because she is trying to force us to hire teachers who were acting inappropriately and she tried to force Yeshivas teach a pro toevah curriculum to kids as young as KINDERGARTEN.

  2. still a small chance to oust her if the frum come out on NOV 8 strong and vote for her Republican opponent:
Joseph S. Chabot – spread the word to all your monsey friends in district 97.

  3. The real reason Jaffe won was because the frum community was too lazy to go out and vote. Everyone talks about politics but no one really cares to bother to vote. Look at the precinct sheets. Frum Jews were absent. They must have been too busy making money and complaining about the election that they didn’t bother to participate in.
