The United States has permanently placed surveillance deep within computer networks from Iran to China, according to a Russian cybersecurity company called Kaspersky Lab.

At a Mexico conference on Monday, the group claimed there’s a two-decade-long campaign by the U.S. that has deeply infected the firmware of computer systems, which is beyond the reach of antivirus controls.

The firm said that these implants were the work of the “Equation Group,” which could be a reference to the National Security Agency.

Apparently, the techniques are similar to Stuxnet, a computer worm placed by Israel and the United States into Iran’s nuclear enrichment program. Read more at The New York Times.
