The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus announced Thursday that it will do away with elephant acts by 2018 because of public concern about the animals.

“There’s been somewhat of a mood shift among our consumers,” said Executive Vice President Alana Feld. “A lot of people aren’t comfortable with us touring with our elephants.”

Last year, the circus’s parent company won $25 million in a legal settlement with the Humane Society and others over alleged elephant abuse. Read more.

  1. I recall being at Madison Square Garden for the circus when I was a small child and we were by some service entrance. There, the smell of the elephants is imprinted on my olfactory memory like nothing else is.

  2. First of all, it was a business decision, meaning that they’re losing customers due to increased concern about animal welfare.

I realize you might disagree, but why is someone who disagrees with you a “kook”?

The Torah//Chazal prohibit “tza’ar ba’alei chaim,” so even if you believe that the way circus elepohants are treated doesn’t fit into the issur, it’s not as if someone’s a “kook” for having the sensitivity to believe it does.

  3. What are they going to do with all their elephant them to an elephant sanctuary? If they are treated humanely why should they be banned? Maybe they’ll stop having lion acts, and horses too? What kind of a circus will it be then?

  4. nebach poor elafentelah is getting scrapped maybe De Blasio will have useful advice maybe replace them with antiqe cars

  5. “What kind of a circus will it be then?”

There are many circuses without animal acts.

And we should be happy that a Jewish businessman is taking a mitzvah seriously. (The Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus is owned by a Jewish family.) Unfortunately, Matzav, in their headline, thinks that this is “sad”.
