santorumRepublican Rick Santorum has for quite a while taken issue with candidates on the trail who use a teleprompter. It’s a dig on President Barack Obama, and more recently has been used to attack Mitt Romney – a man who’s also been known to use a prompter or two.

But campaigning along the Gulf Coast in the Tuesday primary state of Mississippi, Santorum took it a step further, saying use of the digital word machine should be outlawed.

“See, I always believed that when you run for president of the United States, it should be illegal to read off a teleprompter,” Santorum said at a Gulfport restaurant. “Because all you’re doing is reading someone else’s words to people.”

He continued to elaborate on why he believes prompters should have no place in politics, saying that people should know that a candidate’s words haven’t been “focus-grouped” and that the words are the candidate’s – not those of “pollsters and speechwriters.”

“You’re voting for someone who is going to be the leader of our government,” Santorum said. “It’s important for you to understand who that person is in their own words, see them, look them in the eye…hear what’s (in their) heart.”

“You’re choosing a leader. A leader isn’t just about what’s written on a piece of paper.”

Santorum is in the middle of a two-day campaign swing through Mississippi and Alabama – two states that hold their early nominating contests Tuesday.

  1. Santorum is right. Did you know that he instead keeps a little piece of paper with his priority in his hand. I heard that it usually says “HS” for holy spirit. Mr. Santorum is so perfect that he must always remind himself of that holy spirit which he prays to each day before his speeches. This is a dedicated man. (True story- reported in the Wall St Journal.)

  2. Just wait and see. As soon as this Santorum is elected to be President(?? ??????) he will start using TelePrompter equipment.

  3. romney will have his mormon supporters while baptising Jews in their graves and with all his electionery I still dont know his message.

santorium will make USA xtian. His xtian belief is overbearing and imposing.

Gingrich has experience with a political America insight, an historian and logical and supports Israel FOR ISRAEL with no agenda other then Israel FOR JEWS.

  4. Why should be illegal? Mentally impaired needed just others need crutches. Will Santorum make crutches also illegal?

  5. There’s nothing wrong with reading a speech. Presidential contenders don’t need it because they can say anything they want. Who pays attention to them. A president’s every word, however, is weighed by our adversaries. A slip of the tongue or the wrong use of a word can have damaging effects.

  6. It’s a requirement for any public speaker to use a TelePrompter to ensure that they articulate their message and get everything out that they intend to. It is too easy to forget an item or bobble your words when speaking off the cuff as POTUS, an error in speaking could have huge ramifications, the prompter just serves to allow the speaker to read the words that he or she has written, and look at the audience at the same time. For Santorum to allege that reading a prompter means you are reading someone else’s words is silly, firstly, who is to say that the person using the prompter didn’t write their own speech, and second of all, it’s commonly known and accepted that all Presidents, cabinet officials, and most congresspeople have speechwriters who work with the individual to write their speech.

Would, that our only problem in the world today were that the President uses a TelePrompter!

  7. Considering some of the gaffes Mr. Santorum has made in his own speeches, maybe he should be using a teleprompter himself. It would go a long way towards keeping his foot out of his mouth.
