Confederate flagThe South Carolina Senate voted 37-3 to remove the Confederate flag from statehouse grounds on Monday afternoon.

One of the no votes, Republican Lee Bright, took the floor to urge a debate on gay marriage. “Our governor called us in to deal with the flag that sits out front,” he said. “Let’s deal with the nation of sin that we face today. We talk about abortion but this [toeivah] marriage thing, I believe we will be one nation gone under…It’s time for us to make our stand.”

The bill will be sent to the House. Read more at The Post and Courier.

  1. What’s wrong with the confederate flag? It’s a constitutional right! I would be offended if ISIS” flag was hung because it represents what it does but the confederacy? eh! who cares? Just because a lunatic KKK murderer used it in his hate manifesto – so what? What if Tsarnayev used the Georgian flag or the American flag! Why does one individual’s act of violence represent an entire belief change?

  2. “Let’s deal with the nation of sin that we face today. We talk about abortion but this [toeivah] marriage thing, I believe we will be one nation gone under…It’s time for us to make our stand.”

    How right he is!

  3. “What’s wrong with the confederate flag?”

The Confederate Battle Flag is for African Americans what the Nazi Swastika Flag is to us. It is a symbol of racism and treason. It should come down off the flagpole on the statehouse grounds and be sent to a museum.

We of all people should be sensitive to this.

  4. Charlie, you’re right but also wrong! Yes, we ought be sensitive to this but remember two things!
    1) It has nothing to do with “real” African-Americans – it’s a put on, because the slavery issue has as much to do with them as Indonesia has to do with France!
    2) By the first ammendment, it is not illegal to hang the flag, PERIOD! It’s all a sensitivity issue and that’s not virtuous enough to have it removed.
