Sen. Charles Schumer wants his fellow Democrat to unseat billionaire New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, saying the city can’t become too divided between the rich and poor. Schumer and fellow Democrat U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand – who have both spoken highly of Bloomberg – said today that that city Comptroller William Thompson Jr. would be the best mayor for working families. When asked whether Bloomberg had contributed to the struggles of middle-class New Yorkers, Schumer refused to criticize Bloomberg.
But he said he is rooting for the underdog Thompson, who is struggling to raise money. Bloomberg has spent $64.8 million of his own cash seeking a third term.
The election is Nov. 3.
