Schumer to Fight Airline Carry-On Bag Fee

schumerSen. Charles Schumer of New York says he’s trying to get the federal government to prohibit airlines from charging a fee for carry-on baggage, calling it a “jacked-up” cost shift.

The Democrat said today he’s made a personal plea to the Treasury Department to rule carry-on bags are a “necessity’ for travel, which would make them exempt from a separate fee outside the ticket price.

Schumer says such fees artificially avoid higher ticket prices and the taxes applied to tickets.

There’s no immediate comment from the Treasury Department.

  1. Who is the government to regulate a private company’s decisions? If Spirit wants to charge – let them and we’ll see what the customers say – and do. Wal-Mart is lowering prices to draw customers – should we regulate that too a “necessity’ for competitors? How about those convinience stores who state ‘Shirts and Shoes Required’ – doen’t that create a “necessity’ for some shoppers?
