A New York Times investigation into SEAL Team 6, the Navy’s secretive military organization, paints a portrait of the group as both soldiers and spies deployed perhaps too frequently in the U.S.’s global manhunts.
More SEAL Team 6 members have died in the years since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 than in the entire history of the organization, the newspaper reports. And concerns over excessive killings have sprung up as, among other incidents, “even an American hostage freed in a dramatic rescue has questioned why the SEALs killed all his captors.”
Former Senator Bob Kerrey told the paper he thinks the team and other Special Operations units are overused, saying, “They have become sort of a 1-800 number anytime somebody wants something done.” Read more at the New York Times.

The main job of all seal teams, not just team six, is reconnaissance. that’s basically a military way of saying spying. the entire military conducts reconnaissance missions regularly. It’s part of fighting. the Navy SEALs and other special operations forces just do the ones that are conducted in enemy territory and are better equipped and trained to seize “high value targets” (enemy leaders), like Osama bin Laden, or the man who planned 911, khalid sheik Mohammed.
