Haifa city officials took an appallingly destructive approach to evicting talmidim from a yeshiva on Saturday night, amid claims that the space was ‘unlawfully rented.’

Having just arrived on Thursday with their belongings, the talmidim left on motzei shabbos to attend a melave malka. While they were out, chaos ensued: Haifa city employees entered the yeshiva, destroying seforim, furniture, and personal belongings. The talmidim returned to be told that they could not enter.

City Director-General Gadi Margalit has reportedly taken personal responsibility for ‘using his authority’ to close down the yeshiva. Yeshiva representatives are adamant that they occupied the space lawfully, and even compared Saturday’s events to Kristalnacht.

When news of the eviction reached the home of Rav Chaim Kanievsky shlit”a, the Rav called on the Jewish People to join the yeshiva’s urgent efforts to re-establish itself. This includes replacing furniture and seforim, and moving into a new location.

Rav Kanievsky will pray personally for all donors to the yeshiva’s fundraising campaign.

Until the proper money is raised, the talmidim will continue to live in a state of disruption. The yeshiva’s community is deeply shaken by this traumatic event.

    • Nonsense. These “Zionists” give hundreds of millions of Shekels annually to Haredi Yeshivas and Seminaries, including the Mir, Ponevitz, Brisk, etc.

What probably happened: The Yeshiva’s Hanhala decided to move into a space that either (1) they had not paid for; (2) not zoned for a Yeshiva; (3) had safety violations, or all 3. No different than some Yeshivas and Seminaries in Rockland County who believe they are exempt from civil rules and regulations.

      • I’m glad you figured out what probably happened. However, today a judge in Haifa, after hearing both sides of the story, ruled that the city had no justification or legal basis for what they did, that it was unprovoked vandalism, and that the city was liable – at this stage – for 10,000 shekel for legal costs for the court proceedings.

The Judge also issued a restraining order instructing the city to remove itself from the premises and allow the students back in, restoring the status quo ante.

The order was stayed for one day to give the city the opportunity to file an appeal to a higher court by midday Wednesday Israel time. Otherwise the order would go into effect on Thursday.

If this stands it also opens the doors for lawsuits by the yeshiva and the bochurim against the city.

  1. Dear mr. Dov B. Spitzer, Brisk FAMOUSLY does NOT take money from the government. So get your facts straight before spewing nonsense. You ” probably ” are all so an anti Torah Zionist that’s why you defend them.

  2. The holy Zionist give tens of millions of dollars to the yearly toeiva parades in Tel Aviv Jerusalem Haifa Ashdod and beer sheva. They lock up Yeshiva boys but allow Arabs to kill Jews by releasing hundreds of convicted murderers. They are not our friends. They have destroyed the sfardic jewish communities that came from Arab countries. Cut their payos. They had hospitals do forced autopsies on every Orthodox Jew who died. Most of you are too young to know the facts. Their motive is to create a jewish state without Torah values. This is a fact. The poor fools in the misnachlim camp who salute the shmatta flag have had their communities like yamit gush Katif and Amona uprooted. The Zionist want to force the chareidi youth to be in an army led by toeiva generals. Poor 18 year old Yeshiva boys are at their mercy. Some had to shave their beards. Others were forced to stop wearing tzitzos or be cynically embarrassed by female commanders. I travel to israel and see the wickedness how chareidim are made to suffer as the government holds empty land and refuses to allow chareidim to build homes. Instead like they bring millions of non Jews and tell you they are Jews like Ethiopians etc to water down the chareidi influence.

  3. Those Zionist, may the State be destroyed with all the people that live in it!!!!!!
Just beacuse the Yeshivah went against the law, does not mean they should be shut down. If you go to jail for stealing millions from a bank, but the prosecutor went overboard, you are a martyr like Menahem Mendel Beilis.

  4. Even if they were justified in evicting them, they had no right to destroy personal property. This was nothing but Anti-Torah Rishus.

Sure the government gives money to some Yeshivos that are willing to accept it, but it’s not because they love Torah, it’s because they want votes. The Israeli government does everything it can to make Israel a secular state without Torah.
