ted-cruz1Bronx officials fired back today after Sen. Ted Cruz took a swipe at the borough during a speech to a conservative group. Cruz, a Texas Republican, drew the ire of some New York politicians following his comments last night at a rally for Americans for Prosperity.

Cruz said he felt he has been lectured by Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., on border security.

“I understand that Manhattan is very concerned with their security with the Bronx,” Cruz said to laughter. “But it’s a little bit different on 2,000 miles of the Rio Grande.”

New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, who represents voters in Manhattan and the Bronx, called Cruz’s remarks outdated, invoking the the borough’s high-crime past, with what’s happening in the Bronx.

“It’s unfortunate that we have elected officials in high-ranking positions that continue to pander lies and misinformation as a way of trying to peddle their ideas,” Mark-Viverito told Smith.

She said the crime rate in the Bronx is lower than in many cities in Texas.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. said the borough has seen unprecedented, positive growth. His response to Cruz: “Grow up.”

  1. Hope he runs

But will the billionares allow him?

..Rick Santorum drew a standing ovation as he recounted his lonely battle to include moral issues in the national presidential debates in 2012. The most striking part was when he recounted being in a room in New York with several Republican billionaires, who questioned him sharply about his pro-life, pro-family views. Rick noted that other candidates said they held the same views, so why were they grilling him? One of them leaned forward and answered, “Because you really mean it.”

  2. “crime will get worse.”

The stats so far for 2014 compared to the same time in 2013:

    Murder, down 11.0%
    Rape, down 8.5%
    Robbery, down 12.4%
    Felony assault, up 0.1%
    Burglary, down 5.1%
Grand larceny, including auto theft, down 1.0%
