porush-chacham-ovadiah-yosefShas chairman Eli Yishai supports a possible prisoner swap deal for captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, based on a decision by Chacham Ovadiah Yosef, the head of the Shas Party’s Moetzet Chachmei Hatorah.

Deputy Minister of Education Meir Porush, however, recently said that he has been directed not to support a possible deal, because of the inevitable harm that such a swap will bring to the Yidden of Eretz Yisroel.

“I was called this week by two members of the Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah, and they told me not to agree to the price that Hamas demands, under any circumstances,” said Porush in an interview with Ari Ehrlich of Mishpacha.

“We must take into account the damage that can result from such a deal,” Porush said, quoting the rabbonim who spoke to.

According to a report, the rabbonim he referred to are the admorim of Erlau and Sadigur, among others.

Porush added: “I recently received a call from a member of the Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah who asked me: Why do we not hear your voice on this matter [of Shalit]? Why have you not opposed it vehemently? Indeed, two weeks ago, I went to the podium to express the opposition of Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah. I explained that, ultimately, the price is very high, and many Jews will pay for this deal with their very lives.”

“No one has anything against Noam Shalit,” Porush stressed in his comments. “All of this is a question of proportions. The public is inundated with propaganda that does not take into account the damage that could result from a mass release of Palestinian murderers.”

Finance Committee chairman Moshe Gafni of UTJ and MK Eliezer Moses of UTJ have both been lukewarm about the subject, not taking a clear stand.

  1. “Lukewarm Moishe Gafni & Eliezer Moses”.
    You know why?
Because they cannot think 10 minutes into the future.
Does it need a genius to figure out what is going to happen?
If the whole cabinet has to sit for days on that matter, how long would it take them to respond to a substantial & imminent danger to Klal Yisroel?

  2. It has been daas torah of the UTJ party to be parave/lukewarm to all political issues of the State Of Israel. This is not a new phenomenom.

  3. With all due respect to our gedolim, Erets Yisrael is surrounded by millions of enemies, we need syata dishmaya every split second, so what’s the difference if we have one thousand more to deal with. Do we have bitachon or not?
I cannot begin to imagine what Shalit has been going through every minute of every day of every week of every month of every year. Do we want this to continue indefinitely chalila?
Hashem Yerachem on every single Jew.

  4. This is a hard situation to deal with! But if Chacham ovadia says so then we must listen to our Gedolim. Who says porush is right or even Chacham Ovadia. It is hashem to decide. Yet Chacham Ovaida i believe we should follow.

  5. To ‘American Rabbi’ when you said ‘That Rabbi Ovadya supports the deal does not surprise me at all.’ Explain yourself? Please? Im anxious to hear? Hes a Gaon and will put you who titles yourself “American Rabbi” to shame! Dont mess with Gedolim – Supposdly ‘Rabbi’!!!

  6. Rivka, are you dreaming. The murderers of Rav Chai z”tl, hy”d were terrorists who were recently released from prison as a good will gesture. They also signed on a moratorium on no future terror acts. HA, HA…
Let us not preach bitachon and emunah to residents of eretz yisroel, rather do the hishtadlus in the eyes of hashem and keep them behind bars (withOUT TV, visitation, gourmet meals, phones, etc.). My heart does mourn for Gilad in his sorrowful situation.

  7. To #9 israel is real

No, I am not dreaming. Do you think that Rav Chai z”tl hy”d would be alive today if his murderers had not been released from prison. You are dreaming. Hasham decides if and when a person dies. Unfortunately there is no shortage of would be murderers.
It’s written that one does not redeem a captive for more than his worth, if he were to be sold as a captive. I believe this means monetary value. Neither one thousand, nor one million, nor the entire Yishmaeli population is worth ONE JEW.
What hishtadlus is it to deprive prisoners of their luxuries? Does anyone of “their” leaders care one iota??
One Jew is much more precious to them than thousands who rot in jail, no matter what the conditions.
If we don’t do the swap now, if we don’t use the momentum, we might end up with another Ron Arad tragedy chalila.

  8. Rifka you are on the point. And Israel is israel you are correct also, with 2 small missing info. 1) One of the three killers of Rav Chai was released — so he could be the leader of this group or maybe not.
And 2) he was released for nothing, for bananas (to show goodwill). While here we have a Jewish life at stake, and a possibly Kidush Hashem.
TO be honest, I don’t have an opinion formed on this. I would just establish a Beit Din with 10 Gedolim and let them decide.
