sharpton1The Rev. Al Sharpton said he will challenge Arizona’s new immigration bill in court and on the streets. Sharpton is joining Lillian Rodriguez Lopez from the Hispanic Federation to announce a legal challenge to the bill. They said activists were also prepared to commit civil disobedience to fight the Arizona immigration bill.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed the bill Friday. It requires police to question people about their immigration status — including asking for identification — if they suspect someone is in the country illegally.

The law will take effect in late July or early August.

Critics said the law will lead to racial profiling. They fear Hispanics will be harassed by police because of their race and call the bill an open invitation for discrimination. “That law legalizes racial profiling, which we fought so hard to end in this country,” said protester Anamaria Archila.

Brewer, however, said that was not the intent of the law. “I will not tolerate racial discrimination or racial profiling in Arizona.”

President Barack Obama has called the new law “misguided” and has instructed the Justice Department to examine it to see if it’s legal.

At least two groups were planning to file challenges of their own.

Mexico’s president said the law will serve as an obstacle while his nation and Arizona try to solve a shared problem along their border.

  1. I wish al sharpton would mind his own business. The chance that a few people may be inconvienced in order to try and control who is and who is not here legally is a small price to pay for living in the U.S.these days. If a person is in the country legally they have absolutly nothing to worry about.Im a white american and every time i take a plane im ” inconvienced ” at the security checkpoints.Oh well, life goes on.
