eric-cantorIn a devastating upset propelled by tea party activists, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) was defeated in today’s congressional primary, with insurgent David Brat delivering an unpredicted and stunning loss to the second most powerful Republican in the House who has widely been touted as a future speaker.

Brat’s victory gives the GOP a volatile outlook for the rest of the campaign season, with the party establishment struggling late Tuesday to grapple with the news and tea party conservatives relishing a surprising win.

Brat, tapping into conservative anger over Cantor’s role in supporting efforts to reform federal immigration laws, found a way to combat Cantor’s significant financial edge.

Brat only had $40,000 in the bank at the end of March. Cantor had $2 million.

The winner of the GOP primary will face Democratic Party nominee Jack Trammell – a professor at Randolph-Macon College, the same school where Brat works – in the general election this fall. Read more.

  1. Its good to see that Democracy still works in places other than the corrupt New York State. The people of that district have spoken and their vote means something. When was the last time we had even a slight challenge in NY? Jerry Nadler, Charles Rangel, Chuck Schumer, etc… They will be in power till their dying day. Now how about King Cuomo, Hillary Clinton (when she walked in to her Senate seat), Christian Gellibrand? Never any challenge from within their Party or from anywhere else. This is Democracy ??? Its a disgrace!

  2. Remember who called Bibi to pressure the Zionist Chief Rabbinate into accepting Avi Weiss’s conversations as legitimate?

  3. You can be a republican & act like a democrat,
    I don’t go both ways,

If you get caught don’t complain.

  4. This means that come next January there will be no Jewish Republicans in Congress with the exception of one Cuban-American practicing Christian whose Jewish parents converted out.

  5. If the Tea Party Brat doesn’t win in October that’s when this upset will be realized. Can he beat the Democrat? Not likely! This is then a win for the prez and his dems! Oy!

  6. The people of Virginia have spoken, but I’m not sure they did the smartest thing by voting for Brat. Cantor probably has a better chance of beating the Democrat than a Tea Party candidate.

  7. If the Republican majority in this district is not distracted too much by media stuff, the primary winner will get elected.
