shabbosTalk about a fly in the ointment. The Seret-Vizhnitz community in Haifa is coming to grips with the news that its long-time “Shabbos Goy” is actually a Yid.

The revelation has thrown the kehillah into turmoil.

The supposed “Shabbos Goy” is of Romanian origin and himself believed that he and his entire family were Christian.

All was fine and dandy until the Shabbos Goy made mention to someone of the fact that he remembered that his mother lit candles on Friday night. Members of the Vizhnitzer kehillah thought that the man was merely trying to demonstrate his knowledge of Jewish minhagim and practices in order to qualify for Israeli citizenship.

Chassidim later heard the “Goy” singing Yiddishe niggunim, and he explained that he had heard these melodies as a child.

After subsequent investigation and consultations with morei horaah, a p’sak was issued: the man is a Yid.

Members of the kehillah have been apprised of the news and warned not to ask him to perform any melachos because he is a genuine Jew.

  1. “Members of the kehillah have been apprised of the news and warned not to ask him to perform any melachos because he is a genuine Jew.”

You are not allowed to ask a goy to a melacha on Shabbos — I am not a Rav, but that is what I learned.

Truthfully, many kehillos are very lenient with Shabbos goyim.

Perhaps Hashem is giving us all a warning on our use of Shabbos goyim.
