shopriteWith three stores in the Catskills – Monticello, Liberty and Ellenville – Shoprite has significantly upgraded its services to the kosher consumer. Sources say that its sales of kosher foods this summer have soared, particularly in Monticello, where it faces competition from Wal-Mart just across the road.

Shoprite hired Zelig Krymko as its new liaison to the kosher community. He is already committed to sponsor a Cholov Yisroel Kiddush in local shuls and has even instituted a special check-out counter where the monitors are tuned off and the magazines covered over with black plastic bags.

Kosher distributors say that sales of kosher foods in general have soared this season.

  1. We had a great time at the Kiddush sponsored by the Shoprite of Ellenville at the Ellenville Shul (Congregation Ezrath Israel). My wife and I sat opposite the Manager and her Husband and we could appreciate the comments of some of the congregants and of course heard her answer the questions. Some of the comments involved the finding of certain items and where they were located. She made it clear sometimes the items were delivered only sporadically which is why they werenÂ’t always in stock. Also, should the kosher item be put into the kosher section or Jewish rye bread for instance into the bread aisle? She mentioned that if you couldnÂ’t find an item just ask for it. One of the most interesting of the scenes was repeated over and over, this was compliments on how the staff at the store was friendly and helpful. If any of the staff has been especially helpful in the past let her know. I saw how she appreciated hearing it each time it was said. Also while your in the store that person should be acknowledged to the boss, it may be a Kiddush Hashem.
The Kiddush room was packed and everyone was in a happy mood. In shul itself the menÂ’s side had over twenty people and I met some guests I havenÂ’t seen in quite a while. It was a surprise to have Rabbi Hershel Zukker and his wife there and he was chazzan for most of the Shabbos davening. It was very enjoyable. To those who missed it you should at least know of the new kosher products at Shoprite and also the effort that the local store is making for us. Know you were missed and we look forward to seeing you at the shul for other pleasant occasions.
