george-w-bushMore than half of Americans view former president George W. Bush unfavorably, making him the most unpopular living US president, according to a latest poll.

Just 43 per cent of people questioned said they have a favorable opinion of Bush, while 54 per cent said they view him unfavorably, according to the poll by CNN.

Two-thirds of Americans, in contrast, said they have a positive view of Bush’s predecessor, former President Bill Clinton.

Of the other living former presidents, Jimmy Carter is viewed favorably by 54 per cent of people questioned and George H W Bush gets a 59 per cent rating.

Bush’s 43-per cent favorable rating is roughly the same as it was in 2010.

It is higher than it was immediately following his tenure in the White House in 2009, when his favorable rating bottomed out in the high 20s.

The new ratings could help direct President Barack Obama’s campaign strategy before the November election. Obama has spent last few months bad-mouthing Bush’s time in office, blaming him for the economic crisis, the soaring federal debt and two unfinished wars.

“Don’t be surprised if the Obama campaign mentions the name of George W Bush at every opportunity, and don’t be surprised if that strategy works,” CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said.

“And the mention of Bush’s name appears to prompt at least a few people to take a more positive view of their current financial situation.”

The poll also reaffirms the Obama campaign’s strategy of using Clinton to help campaign for Democrats in tough races around the nation.

When asked in the survey whether they are better or worse off than they were four years ago, Americans are split, 44 per cent to 43 per cent.

But when asked whether they are better or worse off than they were four years ago “when Bush was president,” a small gap opens – 47 per cent say they are better off compared to 41 per cent who say they are worse off.

  1. Lableling the majority of the American public as “sick” for having different political opinions than you do is immature and unsophisticated. If you have rational arguements to increase the popularity of a President who led the country into the disastrous, expensive Iraq war, and oversaw the greatest economic collapse of the past 90 years, please list them.

  2. Why get sick over a concerned group of citizens. Bush 43 is less popular and continues to be so less than availble and rewardingly absent post president.

  3. Wow because out of the living presidents, w is my favorite, and I am not the biggest fan of his, but my order of best to worst are:
    1. G.W. Bush
    2. Clinton
    3. G. H. W. Bush
    4. Carter
    5. Obama

  4. He was one of the most honorable-shows how sick America is. I guess they like the ilk of Bill Clinton & Jimmy Carter.

  5. I dont get the “sick world” comment. I;m more surprised at the fact that so many people view him favorable in spite of the fact that the economy was thoughrouly wrecked under his watch, and the factt hat he lied to get america involved in a long and costly war. These ared indisputable facts, even if one were to ignore them can you call those who choose not to a “sick world”?

  6. He is a genuinely nice guy, with sincere values! The other more popular presidents were full of themselves.
But that’s what sells in the USA today.

  7. This man was no tsaddik, not in the slightest. America isn’t “sick” because they have a different perspective than you. This is immature and embarrassing.

  8. Bush’s failed and misguided presidency led directly to the landslide victory of Obama.

He was for illegal alien amnesty.

He persecuted Ramos and Compean for latino points.

His was on terror was a complete and abject failure. He originally showed how insincere he was by making Israel an exception by requiring them to negotiate with the enemy. His recent part in the 9/11 memorial where there was no mention of the Muslim attackers shows that his Saudi guided policies led to a huge defeat for America.

He pushed for the Dubai ports which would have given control to a critical defense resource to a group with sympathies for our enemies. He gave them the manufacture of ball bearings in our military industries which compromises crucial military components.

He partnered with Leftists to introduce fiscal policies that were ruinous for the country.

There is much more that could be said but suffice it to say that he was one of the worst presidents that America ever had.
