The New York State Department of Health has served Skver sect with an order to vacate the former Homowack Lodge. The DOH has given Machne Bnos Skver till Monday to vacate the former frum hotel. Skver opened a girls camp in early July allegedly without a permit and has, according to officials, refused to leave despite warnings from emergency officials. About 265 girls and about 35 families occupy several buildings in the former hotel off Route 209.
“The order is based on serious health and safety conditions that continue to exist at the facility,” said Health Department spokesman Juan Merino in a prepared statement.
The department has indicated that if the camp doesn’t leave, the agency will start a court action to force it off the grounds.
On July 13, DOH and Town of Mamakating officials asked the congregation to leave voluntarily. The Health Department has since cited the owners for numerous health and safety violations.
An unoccupied, three-story building burned to the ground last week. Authorities believe it was arson.
County officials have also called the buildings firetraps, noting the buildings don’t have working sprinkler systems and have electrical and plumbing problems. Skver does a 24-hour fire watch.
